22 Best Philosophical Movies on Netflix (December 2024)

of 22 Best Philosophical Movies on Netflix (December 2024)

We live in circles, in loops, to be precise! We are moving from one instant, one action, or one place to another, only to return to that action or place again. In other words, the world functions in closed, fast-moving, infinite loops. There are always moments that make you want to slow down or pause and reflect on this loop structure of our lives.

Watching a ‘ philosophical movie ‘ is an effective way to do this mental exercise.’ However, there is no telling how a movie can affect you philosophically since, more than a genre, philosophy is how a person perceives a particular film. You can learn about leadership from the ‘Transformers’ movies just as you can learn about the importance of family from the ‘Fast and Furious’ movies, although it is advised not to go about robbing banks for it. But yes, we are talking about those movies that can have a life-changing effect on you, and many great films in the genre are presently available on Netflix.

It follows wife/mother Sam Bloom, whose fall from a balcony causes her partial paralysis, thereby disallowing her from doing what she loves most: surfing. As she distances herself from her family, her kids bring home an injured magpie they name Penguin. As the magpie heals, it inspires Sam to find the strength to come out of her hopeless self until the day the bird flies away, and she finally says, “I’m better.” The film is based on the book of the same name by Cameron Bloom and Bradley Trevor Greive. The book, in turn, is based on the true story of the Bloom family’s interactions with an Australian magpie. You can watch the film here .

Lewis (Matthew Goode) about life, death, love, war, and the existence of God. The give-and-take takes place after World War II begins and incorporates Freud’s strained relationship with his lesbian daughter Anna and Lewis’ traumatic experiences as a soldier in World War I. Based on Mark St. Germain’s eponymous stage play, which is based on Armand Nicholi’s book ‘The Question of God,’ the film offers a gripping philosophical drama fueled by powerful performances. However, his journey wasn’t easy, as he had to go against his father (Ejiofor) to do what he believed was necessary.

‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’ offers a philosophical take on a father-son relationship while addressing the importance of self-belief, whose undertones are incorporated in the film. The process becomes so emotionally challenging for our protagonists at that point that they decide to give everything up.

While it is natural for any married couple to yearn for a child, this film teaches us that it is much more important to be happy yourself in whatever you wish to do in life. 5. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)

critical thinking movies on netflix

Described as “a fable about disobedience as a virtue,” ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,’ is a stop-motion animated reimagining of the classic story of the marionette magically brought to life to bring a smile to the grieving woodcarver Geppetto who lost his son Carlo during a bombing in the Great War in Italy. It will be a disservice to the tale and the movie if we reveal any more, but we must also tell you that it is tough to put into words what the movie is able to achieve, all thanks to animation, which del Toro has clearly stated isn’t a genre but a medium. Animation is cinema. Feel free to check out the movie here .

4. If Anything Happens I Love You (2020)

2. Three of Us (2022)

critical thinking movies on netflix

Directed by Avinash Arun, ‘Three of Us’ is an intimate and contemplative Indian Hindi-language drama that illuminates the fleeting nature of life and the urge of the human heart to return and relish what it once experienced. We have Shailaja, a married woman whose dementia brings her to her childhood hometown in Konkan to relive the special moments and perhaps liberate herself when she has the chance. This includes meeting her “person” from adolescence, Daga, AKA Pradeep Kamat (Jaideep Ahlawat), who also remembers her. Both are married to different people but the way they speak to each other serves as a reminder that they have moved on in their lives but still relish what they had when they were young.

The conversations between Shailaja and her husband, Dipankar (Swanand Kirkire), who doesn’t like Shailaja interacting with another man, and Pradeep and his wife, Sarika (Kadambari Kadam), who gives him the space to deal with the emotion, are equally thoughtful but not complicated and contribute to the overall narrative that flows like a breeze. The film was nominated for eight 2023 Filmfare Awards, out of which it won two. You can watch ‘Three of Us’ here .

Question Everything with These 15 Mind-Bending Shows and Movies

If you’ve ever found yourself questioning the nature of your reality, you’ve arrived at the right list. One of the reasons mind-benders are perennially popular is their versatility. Some incorporate elements of science fiction and horror, while others are just about ordinary people getting into extraordinary situations. It’s a genre that’s open to interpretation; the only real requirement is that they make you think.

There are so many engrossing mind-benders that we couldn’t limit ourselves to only shows  or just movies, which means you’re getting recommendations for both. Our picks include the groundbreaking anthology  Black Mirror , time-loop series  Russian Doll, and the hallucinatory film  Spiderhead , among others. There are plenty of options here to keep you busy — and keep you guessing — for a while.

Behind Her Eyes

Mind games run rampant in Steven Lightfoot’s pulpy erotic thriller series  Behind Her Eyes,  which is based on Sarah Pinborough’s novel of the same name. It stars Simona Brown as Louise, a single mother who strikes up an unlikely friendship with the wife of her boss ––  with whom she is having an affair. As Louise becomes more deeply involved in their marriage, she discovers that she’s become caught in the middle of a tangled web of secrets. Come for the messy love triangle, stay for its game-changing twists and turns.

Black Mirror

critical thinking movies on netflix

Charlie Brooker’s cerebral anthology series has become synonymous with foreshadowing our dystopian future (cheery!), but it’s also one of the best shows to watch when you’re looking for something that might mess with your head a bit. Every episode stands alone, but all deal in some form with the escalation of technology in our modern era. Over six seasons (and with another on the way ),  Black Mirror has explored a range of themes — the endurance and collapse of romantic relationships in episodes like “San Junipero” and “Hang the DJ,” the lingering effects of grief in “Be Right Back,” the perils of social media in “Nosedive” — and gone in many different directions. But at its core, it’s a show about the tech-fueled world we live in, how we’ve gotten here, and where we fit into it.

Brand New Cherry Flavor

Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion’s limited-series  adaptation of Todd Grimson’s novel unfolds like a delightful fever dream. Rosa Salazar stars as Lisa Nova, a filmmaker who arrives in Hollywood in the early ’90s with the big dream of directing her first movie. When a bad experience with a predatory producer leaves her on the hunt for revenge, she turns to a mystical witch, Boro (Catherine Keener), for help. From there, everything proceeds to get weirder — a character vomiting kittens isn’t even the wildest image you’ll see while watching this show.  Brand New Cherry Flavor blends elements of supernatural horror, psychological thrills, and gory camp, going down unpredictable avenue after unpredictable avenue. By the end, you’ll be glad you kept your mind open to its madness.

Original and expertly crafted, Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese’s German supernatural thriller is about — stay with us — the fallout after a young boy goes missing in a small rural town, the subsequent search to find him, the wormhole that opens up under the nearby nuclear power plant, and the head-scratching conspiracy involving a handful of interconnected local families. That’s not even mentioning the time travel element, which plays a major role in how the eerie events unfold. Are you still following? There’s certainly a lot to unpack here, but the payoff is so rewarding.

If you miss the classic TV procedural but also find yourself wishing for a show with some twisty supernatural elements, you should make  Evil your next watch . Created by Robert and Michelle King, the husband and wife duo who also gave us  The Good Wife and  The Good Fight ,  Evil stars Katja Herbers as forensic psychologist Kristen Bouchard, Mike Colter as priest-in-training David Acosta, and Aasif Mandvi as tech expert Ben Shakir. The three form a quirky trio recruited by the Catholic Church to investigate possible demonic activity.  Evil strikes a tricky balance between dark and playful, having a blast with its monster-of-the-week format as it probes at morality while simultaneously sending its characters into increasingly twisted situations.

Jeff Baena directs this surreal drama about Sarah (Alison Brie), a lonely young woman with a deep love of horses who begins to have bizarre, prophetic dreams that bleed into her waking life. It doesn’t take long for  Horse Girl to reveal its titular character as an unreliable narrator, and Brie gives a startling performance that keeps us on Sarah’s side even as the film asks us to question her. Is Sarah actually unwell, or is she just surrounded by people who don’t believe the things she says? What is the truth?  Horse Girl is both an effective portrait of mental illness and a twisty movie full of red herrings that will keep you on your toes until the very last scene.

Stop-motion animation is used to great (and unsettling) effect in this dreamy three-part anthology.  The House , written by Enda Walsh, establishes its subtly creepy aura the moment it introduces the fuzzy, jerkily moving figures who populate its universe. It centers around a very old house where strange events are always happening, telling the stories of three families who’ve lived inside it. The years go by, but what remains consistent is that things are never quite right in this house: Items go missing, the developer won’t leave the premises, and there may or may not be some spirits lurking about. The combination of this film’s otherworldly quality and talented voice cast, which includes Mia Goth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Matthew Goode, make it a must-watch.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things

Charlie Kaufman has spent decades making films that prove he’s a master of the psychological, from  Being John Malkovich to  Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind . His adaptation of  I’m Thinking of Ending Things , based on Iain Reid’s 2016 novel of the same title, is an escalation of his unique style. It’s hard to know where to start when trying to describe this film, and any description would only really be partial. What starts out as a recognizable story of a young man, Jake (Jesse Plemons), bringing his girlfriend (Jessie Buckley) home to meet his parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis) quickly grows more tense and ambiguous. It caps off with a dizzying ending that’ll leave you ready to debate theories with everyone you know. Watch it and then watch it again — you probably won’t have the same interpretation twice.

It just wouldn’t be a proper list of mind-bending TV shows without  Lost . Co-created by J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, the series opens on the fateful plane crash that leaves its confused, disoriented, and injured passengers stranded on a mysterious island. They’re forced to learn how to survive while coping with their own personal trauma. Over six seasons,  Lost becomes a  ride , packed with dramatic twists, plenty of supernatural elements, and flashbacks, as well as tons of interpersonal conflict among its rich cast of characters. Whether you anxiously awaited new episodes every week during its original run or you’re a new fan streaming it, there’s never a bad time to catch up with the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815.

Love, Death & Robots

Deadpool director Tim Miller created this diverse collection of animated shorts that counts David Fincher as an executive producer. Its title is a reference to the series’ three key themes, although no episode is the same as the one before it. That’s in part because of the way it dabbles in different genres, but also because of the way it uses several different animation styles, establishing a visual language that never gets boring.  Love, Death & Robots is an exploration of the tenuous nature of reality, and with every episode clocking in at 20 minutes or less, it’s a fast watch.

Patrick Somerville’s inventive limited series will surprise you with  how often it can surprise you. Set in a slightly dystopian version of New York where anything can be turned into a money-making opportunity, the drama stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill as Annie and Owen, two strangers who meet when they sign up for a mysterious pharmaceutical trial. The trial, which happens over the course of just three days, puts them through the ringer as they embark on a series of subconscious journeys through various worlds, genres, and identities. In one episode, they’re thrown into an espionage thriller; another takes place within a fantasy epic. This is all in the name of the study, which claims to be able to help them through the traumas they’ve experienced in their lives. You’ll be left wondering what’s real and what’s not just as often as the characters do, and while it’s tempting to try and figure out every one of  Maniac ’s mysteries right away, it’s a show best enjoyed by letting the story reveal itself in due time.

Manifest became something of a social media phenomenon over the course of its four seasons , boasting a legion of devoted fans who closely monitored every clue they were given. Jeff Rake’s supernatural mystery series revolves around the odd incident of Montego Air Flight 828. After a turbulent ride, the plane lands safely, only for the passengers to discover that five years have inexplicably passed while they were in the air. In that time, the plane was declared missing and all aboard presumed dead, forcing their loved ones to move on without them. Thrust back into a suddenly unfamiliar world, certain of the survivors find themselves experiencing strange visions as they try to piece together the puzzle of what exactly happened on Flight 828.

Nothing is as it seems in Richard Shepard’s loopy horror-thriller, which stars Allison Williams as Charlotte, a talented cellist whose budding career is put on hold after her mother falls ill. Years later, she attempts to reconnect with a mentor (Steven Weber) from her prestigious music academy days, who introduces her to Lizzie (Logan Browning), another student with a promising future. The two quickly form a connection, and then Lizzie gets sick on a trip to Shanghai, which is when everything starts to unravel in progressively shocking ways. To even hint at what comes next would be a disservice to the twists and tricks this film’s script, written by Shepard, Eric C. Charmelo, and Nicole Snyder, has in store. We recommend buckling up and giving yourself over to a trippy ride.

Russian Doll

critical thinking movies on netflix

It just wouldn’t be a proper list of mind-benders without a time-loop story. This darkly funny series focuses on game developer Nadia (Natasha Lyonne), who finds herself trapped in a peculiar situation: She keeps reliving the day of her 36th birthday party, dying at the end of each night only to wake up unharmed the next morning. As the cosmic forces of the universe work against her, the increasingly discombobulated Nadia is left trying to figure out why it’s happening and how to make it stop. Each of Nadia’s brushes with death and life (and back again) are as eye-opening as they are baffling, helping her uncover truths about her life and relationships while also leaving her with a host of existential questions. After originally premiering in 2019,  Russian Doll   returned for a second season in 2022, turning its focus to time travel and generational trauma.

Joseph Kosinski has had a strong showing in 2022, directing the blockbuster megahit  Top Gun: Maverick and the  intriguing sci-fi thriller  Spiderhead . An adaptation of a short story by George Saunders,  Spiderhead is set in a futuristic prison where inmates voluntarily serve as test subjects for experimental, psychedelic drugs to reduce their sentences. Everything about the arrangement is disorienting, from their lack of exposure to the outside world to the way the drugs mess with their perceptions of reality. Ambitious tech bro Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth) is the man who oversees it all, and Jeff (Miles Teller), who’s been participating in the program for so long that it no longer seems to affect him, is his star pupil. Things seem to be fairly harmonious until Jeff and his fellow inmate Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett) begin to discover cracks in Steve’s facade, sending them on a search for answers.

This complex notion is the capacity to think clearly and rationally and form a logical relationship between concepts, subjects, and ideas.

The ability to analyze and solve problems, creative thinking, great communication, and empathy comes with a person’s potential to think critically and intensely. But this is not something that can be taught theoretically in school or by books. A child needs practical learning to understand the basics of critical thinking and later exercise it in real life.

A lot of learning about different skills comes from daily activities , games, and even movies. Movies teach us a lot of life and life skills, critical thinking being one of them. This article will be all about such movies which promote critical thinking and enable the individual to indulge and practice attributes like self-evaluation, drawing conclusions, creativity, emotional intelligence, and much more.

Movies & Critical Thinking

When individuals are exposed to new information, they need to carefully and logically find out how this information relates to what they already know. Similarly, whenever a movie makes an individual aware of a certain emotion, feeling, or attribute, they begin to think consciously about it and try to fit it in their library of attributes.

Once in a while, a clever movie comes in and plays with an individual’s mind, which in turn helps promote critical thinking. There lies suspense and twists at every stage of a good survival and thrilling movie, which compel the audience to use their mind critically. Fortunately enough, nature endows each individual with intrigue and vision that can be further enhanced if we indulge in the movies that make us question and think hard over our existing beliefs and notions.

How do movies help in critical thinking?

Film or movies are an effective educational tool. Films can help individuals better comprehend and empathize with the life experiences of other persons by providing diverse views in compelling and emotional ways.

Individuals learn to investigate, evaluate, synthesize, and understand using the movies and their plots as catalysts. Movies serve as a training tool for survival skills and real-world situations. Above all, movies are becoming a great medium to impart skills that help children think critically to solve problems.

Wrapping up

Although movies cannot be used as a primary method of teaching attributes, skills, and abilities, they work perfectly as they push us to think intensely and build new qualities, such as critical thinking. These movies can be added to the class activities, and later the teacher can also host a debate, which will be even more beneficial for the student. These movies can also be given as homework for holidays, and later the teacher can discuss them in class to understand whether the child has comprehended the plot well. Movies are often looked at as a source of entertainment, but very few give out life lessons and make the individual more aware of their feelings, likes, dislikes, and so much more.

This documentary has the inspirational movie recipe memorized. Just take one ambitious climber (Nirmal Purja), a huge dream (trekking the world’s 14 highest mountains in only seven months), and let those simmer for around two hours.

Beyond the pulse-quickening story, this film largely succeeds thanks to the riveting footage shot by the expedition team. The other production efforts are still impressive, but nothing beats the raw experience of walking alongside those trying to make the impossible possible. —Chris Snellgrove

Becoming (2020)

After Michelle Obama ’s 2018 memoir became a best-seller, it was only a matter of time before it was adapted into a film. Director Nadia Hallgren had immense access to Obama, following her across a 34-city book tour and turning the introspective writing into a dynamic reflection of the author as the archetypal modern woman.

As EW’s critic writes in the review , “[G]enerally, Obama comes across as she always has — commanding but approachable, thoughtful but funny, sincere but guarded. But after spending eight years in the White House glare, that guard is understandable.” —C.S.

The Greatest Night in Pop Music (2024)

Courtesy of Netflix

The ‘80s were a different time, man. Back then, you could convince 45 of the world’s biggest musical artists to spend one night recording a song, with all sales intended to help fight famine in Africa. The song — “ We Are the World ,” co-written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson — facilitated one of the biggest and most successful charitable collaborations in musical history, and the story of how that one night came to pass makes for a pretty great documentary.

Narrated by the living artists who participated in the recording, the film is a shining example of what can happen when celebrities combine their platforms for good, and its relevance is particularly strong today. Littered with celebrity anecdotes and musical history, The Greatest Night in Pop is a lovely reminder of the healing powers of music, and a moving tribute to the artists involved who have since died. —Ilana Gordon

Race (2016)

Thibault Grabherr/©Focus Features/courtesy Everett

The story of Jesse Owens, played in this biographical sports drama by Stephan James , is a fascinating one. A college athlete out of Depression-era Cleveland, Owens makes enough of an impression on his Ohio State coach Larry Snyder ( Jason Sudeikis ) for Snyder to push him toward the Olympics. But the 1936 games — held in Berlin during the early years of the Third Reich — make for an uncomfortable setting for Owens as he attempts to fulfill his athletic dreams.

The story of a young man attempting to outrun the racial and cultural forces seeking to limit his excellence, Race is an important addition to the sports movie canon. Director Stephen Hopkins does a good job of allowing his subject to own his flaws and feats while still acknowledging that, as EW’s critic points out in their review , “triumphing over Nazi athleticism didn’t do much for the racism at home.” —I.G.

Shirley (2024)

Glen Wilson/Netflix

According to Regina King , there are many elements of the biopic Shirley — the story of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first to compete for a presidential nomination from a major political party — that were a long time coming. King stars as Chisholm opposite her own real-life sister, Reina King, with whom she co-produced the project. As Regina tells EW , the sisters chose Shirley “because we realized there were far too many people who didn’t even know her name.”

The film more than corrects this, detailing Chisholm’s inspiring attempt to secure the Democratic nomination in 1972, and drilling into the sexism and racism she had to overcome in order to win the respect of her peers. The script does an excellent job of detailing Chisholm’s political career and legacy, while still humanizing her with familial and relationship issues to overcome. And now all that history is available for you to watch on Netflix. —I.G.

Simmons won an Oscar for his frightening portrayal of Andrew's band conductor, Terence Fletcher, who pushes him past the breaking point.

With its propulsive editing and tight-as-a-drum screenplay, Whiplash is a mesmerizing examination of what it takes to relentlessly pursue your art, and the consequences that come with it. “You don’t have to be a jazz fan for Whiplash to zap you with its thrumming live-wire beat (although it doesn’t hurt),” writes EW’s critic . “If you can appreciate the sight of two totally dialed-in performers simmering until they boil over, that’s enough.” —K.J.

Psychology Movies on Netflix: Top Picks for Mental Health Enthusiasts

Psychology Movies on Netflix: Top Picks for Mental Health Enthusiasts

From gripping thrillers to thought-provoking documentaries, Netflix’s growing collection of psychology-themed movies offers a captivating window into the complexities of the human mind. As we settle into our comfy couches, remote in hand, we’re not just embarking on a night of entertainment; we’re diving headfirst into a world where the silver screen meets the intricacies of the psyche. It’s a delicious cocktail of popcorn and Freudian slips, if you will.

The marriage of psychology and cinema is nothing new, of course. Since the early days of film, directors and writers have been fascinated by the inner workings of our minds. From Alfred Hitchcock’s masterful manipulation of audience psychology to the surrealist dreamscapes of David Lynch, the big screen has long been a playground for exploring the human condition. But Netflix, with its vast library and algorithm-driven recommendations, has taken this exploration to a whole new level.

Gone are the days when you’d have to scour obscure video stores or wait for that one psychology-themed film to hit your local cinema. Now, with just a few clicks, you can access a smorgasbord of psychological content that would make Sigmund Freud’s mustache twirl with excitement. It’s like having a therapist’s couch in your living room, minus the hefty hourly rate.

But why should we care about these psychology movies? Well, for starters, they’re downright entertaining. There’s something inherently fascinating about peeling back the layers of the human mind, even if it’s through the lens of fiction. It’s like being a detective, but instead of solving crimes, you’re unraveling the mysteries of consciousness, behavior, and emotion. And let’s face it, sometimes it’s just fun to watch characters make terrible decisions and think, “Well, at least I’m not that messed up!”

Beyond entertainment, though, these films serve a valuable educational purpose. They can introduce complex psychological concepts in digestible, relatable ways. Sure, you might not be writing a thesis on cognitive behavioral therapy after watching a psychological thriller, but you might gain some insights into your own thought patterns or behaviors. It’s like sneaking vegetables into a kid’s meal – you’re getting some nutritional value along with your cinematic dessert.

Psychological Thrillers: Exploring the Human Mind

Now, let’s dive into the world of psychological thrillers, shall we? These are the films that keep you on the edge of your seat, make you question reality, and occasionally have you checking under the bed before you go to sleep. They’re like roller coasters for your mind – thrilling, sometimes scary, but ultimately exhilarating.

Psychological thrillers are characterized by their focus on the psychological states of their characters. They often blur the lines between reality and perception, leaving viewers questioning what’s real and what’s imagined. These films typically involve elements of suspense, mystery, and often, a healthy dose of unreliable narrators. It’s like playing a game of mental chess with the filmmaker, where every scene could be a potential checkmate to your understanding of the plot.

Netflix has a treasure trove of psychological thrillers that will make your neurons do backflips. One standout is “Shutter Island,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. This mind-bending tale set in a psychiatric facility is a masterclass in unreliable narration and the exploration of trauma and guilt. It’s the kind of film that has you reaching for the replay button as soon as the credits roll, just to see what clues you might have missed.

Another gem is “Black Swan,” which delves into the psychological pressures of perfectionism and the blurring of reality and fantasy. Natalie Portman’s portrayal of a ballerina descending into madness is both beautiful and terrifying – it’s like watching a psychological breakdown en pointe.

“Gone Girl,” based on Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel, is a twisted exploration of marriage, media manipulation, and the masks we wear in relationships. It’s the kind of film that might make you side-eye your significant other for a few days after watching.

For those who like their psychological thrillers with a side of science fiction, “Ex Machina” offers a thought-provoking look at artificial intelligence and what it means to be human. It’s like a Turing test wrapped in a thriller, with some seriously unsettling dance moves thrown in for good measure.

Rounding out our top five is “The Machinist,” starring a gaunt Christian Bale. This film explores the effects of extreme insomnia and guilt on the human psyche. It’s a haunting portrayal of a mind unraveling, and it might just make you appreciate your next good night’s sleep a little more.

These films don’t just entertain; they force us to confront uncomfortable truths about human nature. They explore themes of identity, perception, memory, and the thin line between sanity and madness. Watching these movies is like holding up a funhouse mirror to our own psyches – the reflections might be distorted, but they reveal aspects of ourselves we might not have noticed before.

Documentaries: Real-life Psychology Stories

While psychological thrillers offer fictionalized explorations of the mind, documentaries provide a window into real-world psychological phenomena. These films can be just as gripping as their fictional counterparts, with the added punch of knowing that what you’re watching actually happened.

Psychology documentaries have a unique power to shed light on mental health issues, challenge societal perceptions, and foster empathy. They’re like a bridge between the academic world of psychology and the general public, translating complex concepts into relatable human stories.

Netflix has been particularly strong in this area, offering a range of documentaries that tackle various aspects of psychology and mental health. “The Mind, Explained” is a series that breaks down different psychological concepts in bite-sized, visually engaging episodes. It’s like having a really cool psychology professor who uses memes and celebrity cameos to explain how your brain works.

“Take Your Pills” offers a provocative look at the use of prescription stimulants in America, exploring the pressure to perform and the fine line between enhancement and addiction. It’s a sobering reminder that sometimes, the most dangerous drugs come with a doctor’s prescription.

For a more personal exploration of mental health, “The Mask You Live In” examines the psychological impact of masculine stereotypes on boys and young men. It’s a powerful look at how societal expectations can shape our mental health from a young age.

These documentaries do more than just inform; they contribute significantly to mental health awareness. By bringing these issues into the mainstream, they help destigmatize mental health conditions and encourage open conversations. It’s like they’re giving a voice to experiences that have long been whispered about or ignored entirely.

Dramas Tackling Mental Health Issues

While thrillers and documentaries have their place, sometimes it’s the quieter, character-driven dramas that leave the most lasting impact when it comes to portraying mental health issues. These films often provide a more nuanced, intimate look at the day-to-day realities of living with mental health conditions.

Netflix has a strong lineup of dramas that tackle psychological themes with sensitivity and depth. “Silver Linings Playbook” offers a refreshingly honest portrayal of bipolar disorder, wrapped in a quirky romantic comedy package. It’s like watching a dance between two wonderfully flawed individuals, set to the rhythm of mood swings and therapy sessions.

“A Beautiful Mind” tells the true story of John Nash, a brilliant mathematician living with schizophrenia. It’s a powerful exploration of the human spirit’s resilience in the face of mental illness, and it might just change the way you think about the fine line between genius and madness.

For a more recent offering, “To the Bone” tackles the difficult subject of eating disorders with honesty and dark humor. It’s a raw, sometimes uncomfortable watch, but it sheds light on a condition that’s often misunderstood or glamorized in media.

These dramas play a crucial role in destigmatizing mental health issues. By portraying characters with mental health conditions as fully-realized, complex individuals rather than caricatures or plot devices, they help foster understanding and empathy. It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, mental health issues are a part of many people’s lives, and that’s okay.”

Psychological Aspects in Unexpected Genres

Now, let’s take a little detour into some unexpected territory. You might think that heavy psychological themes are reserved for serious dramas or intense thrillers, but you’d be surprised at how often they pop up in lighter genres. It’s like finding a nugget of wisdom in your fortune cookie – unexpected, but oddly satisfying.

Psychological comedy movies are a prime example of this. Films like “Groundhog Day” explore existential themes and personal growth through the lens of comedy. It’s a film that makes you laugh while also pondering the nature of purpose and self-improvement. Who knew being stuck in a time loop could be so enlightening?

“Inside Out” is an animated film that does a remarkable job of explaining complex psychological concepts to audiences of all ages. It personifies emotions and explores how they interact within our minds, all while telling a touching story about growing up. It’s like “Psychology 101” wrapped in a colorful, family-friendly package.

These films in unexpected genres serve an important purpose. They make psychological concepts more accessible to wider audiences who might be intimidated by more serious or academic presentations. It’s like slipping vitamins into a smoothie – you’re getting something nutritious, but it goes down easy and tastes great.

The Educational Value of Psychology Movies on Netflix

So, we’ve taken a whirlwind tour through Netflix’s psychology offerings, but you might be wondering: beyond entertainment, what’s the real value here? Well, buckle up, because we’re about to explore how these films can be more than just a way to pass a lazy Sunday afternoon.

First off, these movies can be a fantastic supplement to formal psychology education. Now, I’m not suggesting you skip your Psych 101 lectures in favor of a Netflix binge (tempting as that might be). But these films can help bring textbook concepts to life in vivid, memorable ways. It’s like the difference between reading about a roller coaster and actually riding one – both have value, but the experience makes the concept stick.

For instance, watching “A Beautiful Mind” can provide a more visceral understanding of schizophrenia than a textbook description ever could. Or consider how “Inside Out” could be used to explain basic concepts of emotional regulation to children (or adults who need a refresher). It’s edutainment at its finest.

But even if you’re not a psychology student, these films offer valuable opportunities for self-reflection and personal growth. Watching characters grapple with their inner demons can often hold up a mirror to our own struggles and coping mechanisms. It’s like having a therapy session, but your therapist is your TV, and instead of talking, you’re munching on popcorn.

Of course, it’s important to remember that these are movies, not medical textbooks. While many films strive for accuracy in their portrayals of psychological issues, they’re ultimately created to entertain. It’s crucial to approach them with a balance of openness and critical thinking. Think of it as mental junk food – enjoyable in moderation, but you wouldn’t want to base your entire psychological diet on it.

That being said, even when movies take liberties with psychological accuracy, they can still spark important conversations and increase general awareness about mental health issues. A film doesn’t have to be 100% scientifically accurate to make people think, feel, and talk about psychological topics they might otherwise ignore.

Conclusion: Your Psychological Netflix Journey Awaits

As we wrap up our tour through the psychological landscape of Netflix, it’s clear that we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s available. From nail-biting thrillers that make you question reality, to heartwarming animated features that explain the workings of the mind, to hard-hitting documentaries that shine a light on real-world mental health issues, there’s truly something for every taste and mood.

The world of streaming has revolutionized how we consume content, and psychology-themed movies and shows have been particular beneficiaries of this shift. No longer relegated to art house cinemas or limited theatrical runs, these films can now find their audience more easily than ever before. It’s like a psychological buffet is now available at your fingertips, 24/7.

As streaming platforms continue to invest in original content, we can expect to see even more diverse and nuanced explorations of psychological themes in the future. Who knows? The next groundbreaking portrayal of a mental health condition or a mind-bending psychological thriller could be just a click away.

So, dear reader, I encourage you to dive into this rich pool of content. Whether you’re a psychology student looking to supplement your studies, a mental health advocate seeking to broaden your understanding, or simply someone who enjoys a good mind-bending story, Netflix’s psychology offerings have something for you.

Remember, though, that while these films can be enlightening and thought-provoking, they’re not substitutes for professional help if you’re struggling with mental health issues. Think of them as conversation starters, not conclusive answers.

So grab your remote, get comfy, and prepare to embark on a journey into the human mind. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself analyzing your dreams or psychoanalyzing your friends after your Netflix binge. After all, a little self-reflection never hurt anybody – just ask Freud!

These 8 science-fiction movies/series have made it to our first list of movies/series that are bound to make you think. A Netflix series full of breaches of scientific integrity , unethical practices and more (get ready for some D.R.A.M.A. ) when two researchers discover a way to make use of DNA to find "the perfect match" - aka The 2.0 version of Tinder.

Food-for-thought:

Are genetic companies supposed to disclose incidental findings to their customers?

Do genetic companies have a duty to share their DNA database with researchers/clinicians to find cures for debilitating diseases?

How can we avoid having companies making false claims and creating hype over a technology or service?

2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

When we talk romance, we are bound to talk about heartbreak. In this movie, after going through an awful breakup, Joel and Clementine decide to undergo a medical procedure to erase memories of each other - aka the 2.0 version of burning your ex's belongings?

Our past makes us who we are. When we delete particular memories of our past (persons, events, etc.), what does that make us? Can we tailor with our past memories to control who we will become?

In the case of a traumatic experience, will erasing certain memories of the trauma be considered ethical or even desirable?

3. GATTACCA (1997)

critical thinking movies on netflix

In this old sci-fi movie, Vincent - who was born genetically inferior - fools the system by taking on the identity of a genetically superior individual to fulfill his dream of becoming an astronaut. Nothing could stop him, not even his length!

As we move towards a world where deciphering our genome is becoming easier and more accurate with the days, how can we ensure we do not become dictated by genetic determinism?

How can we make use of genetic information without falling into traps of eugenic, racism, and other scientific-informed societal malpractices?

4. Black Mirror (2011)

critical thinking movies on netflix

It's dark, it feels very real, and makes you want to throw every screen you own out the window. This thought-provoking series raises ethical, legal, and societal implications of emerging technologies, leaving you with the feeling that there is still time to make things right.

Do we truly have control over how technologies will manifest in the future?

What kind of relationship do we envision us ( humans ) having with future technologies?

How can we consider the ethical and societal implications of technologies when we cannot imagine all possible scenarios?

5. The Island (2005)

critical thinking movies on netflix

The Island, is a movie centered on cloning "rich" individuals that live in the outside world, and which can eventually make use of their clones if they are to ever fall ill and require organ transplantation. The clones are isolated in a far away place, and things start to escalate when McGregor (one of the clones) starts questioning his reality, exposing this illegal practice.

How can we avoid technologies to cause a divide between socio-economic classes?

How can we protect individuals against scientific/clinical malpractices?

6. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

After lying in a coma for a very long time, the parents of Martin decide to purchase a human child robot to replace the loss they have endured. David - a highly intelligent child robot - develops a strong attachment to his human mother and is eager to become "real" to regain her love.

Do we humans have obligations to highly advanced robots that we ourselves have created?

What relationship do we envision having with robots in the future and where do we draw the line?

Are we, the creators of highly advanced and intelligent robots, required to grant robots rights?

7. The Circle (2017)

How much power are WE giving big tech companies?

Who owns our data and what is being done with it?

How can we take back control over our use of technology (e.g. smartphones)

Can technologies substitute for human social contact?

What will our societies look like if our relationships with technology become dependable?

Can technology truly serve as a quick fix for human problems such as loneliness, depression, etc.
