Get ready to buy some new cables. Apple is about to announce the iPhone 15 and, with it, a change from Lightning to USB-C. It’s one of the biggest changes to the iPhone in years — and one that’s likely to infuriate as many people in need of new cables as it does excite those who are happy to consolidate around just one.

Alongside the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro, Apple is also expected to introduce new Apple Watches. The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are expected to be modest updates focused on internal improvements. We’re also expecting a new line of accessories using a more sustainable material and possibly some other gear — like an updated AirPods Pro case — that shifts over to USB-C as well.

The event starts at 1PM ET / 10AM PT, and you’ll be able to follow along with the latest here. We’ve got an embed of Apple’s YouTube stream, and our own team is on the ground reporting live with photos and videos. Apple’s in-person presentation usually runs slightly ahead of the streamed one, so you can follow along below to get the details as they’re happening.

iPhone 15 launches on Sept. 22. Preorders start on Sept. 15

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max pricing.

The entire iPhone 15 line -- including the Plus, Pro and Pro Max -- will be available for preorder on Sept. 15, starting at 5 a.m. PT. All devices will be available on Sept. 22.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro will launch on...

We're not sure. In a weird twist, Apple didn't unveil a release or preorder date.

iPhone 15 Pro records spatial videos for Vision Pro

Apple's iPhone 15 Pro models have improved cameras and processors, but they also have a feature for Apple's upcoming spatial computing headset, Vision Pro. The Pro phones will be able to record 3D spatial video that can be seen on Vision Pro headsets. The feature is launching next month, even though Vision Pro won't arrive until 2024.

One question I have: Will this spatial video feature be viewable anywhere else other than Vision Pro in the meantime? It's a clear incentive to try to port over more memories into Apple's AR/VR world, but it's not clear if you need to record clips in a whole different mode to do it.

iPhone 15 Pro Max gets price bump, but 256GB storage

iPhone 15 Pro will start at $999 at 128GB of storage, whereas the Pro Max will start at $1,199, which is $100 more than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. But, Apple says it'll include more storage at 256GB, which makes the bill somewhat more justifiable.

iPhone 15 Pro stats

Iphone 15 pro and 15 pro max, iphone 15 can record directly to external drives with usb-c.

Apple brings some pro features to photographers and videographers. Thanks to the USB-C port and a USB 3.0 cable, you can now record directly to an external drive to allow for 4K 60fps recording. It's also possible to take photos while plugged into a MacBook, sending photos directly and quickly. Apple says video recording will also include LOG encoding and will support ACES color standards.

Spatial video

Ultrawide camera, apple shows off 5x optical zoom with iphone 15 pro.

Different focal lengths shown off on iPhone 15 Pro.

Apple says that pro photo fans will have more features to play with on iPhone 15. This includes setting certain focal lengths as standard. Apple also touts its better night photography, capturing more color in darker scenes. But the major selling point is its 5x telephoto 12-megapixel camera. Apple also says it has the largest focal length of any phone camera. It uses a telescoping lens to give users a longer focal length with greater stabilization.

5x telephoto camera

Assassin's creed mirage is coming to iphone 15 pro.

Assassin's Creed Mirage coming to iPhone 15 Pro in 2024.

Apple says the console version of the game is coming to the iPhone 15 Pro next year. Apple also says this is the first time a full console game can be played natively on the iPhone.

iPhone 15 Pro getting Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Village

The iPhone 15 Pro can play console games like Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village.

Apple says the iPhone 15 Pro is the best phone for gaming. Games like Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 are coming to the iPhone. Games like The Division Resurgence, Honkai: Star Rail and Genshin Impact will look better.

A17 Pro GPU is major redesign

iPhone 15 Pro gameplay

Apple says the GPU on the A17 Pro chip is its biggest design in history. Apple says the 6-core GPU will feature hardware-accelerated ray tracing for more realistic lighting in games. Apple says the use of Metal FX upscaling will give higher-quality graphics and resolution at more efficient loads.

A17 Pro Bionic chip is here

Apple has announced the A17 Pro Bionic chip, made on a 3nm process. This allows more transistors on the chip, increasing efficiency and power. Apple says A17 Pro is 3x faster than the competition. The Neural Engine is faster, too. This uses machine learning on the device to help with typing and speech recognition.

iPhone 15 gets customizable Action button

Apple has introduced a customizable Action button. This isn't a totally new feature in smartphones, as many Android phones have done this in the past. But this will allow users an extra button to pull up certain features quickly. Or, we assume, people can still use the Action button to mute.

iPhone 15 Pro back glass easily replaceable

Apple is really excited about the iPhone 15 Pro material design. The internal aluminum is fully recycled. Apple says it takes 14 hours to fully apply the titanium layer and brushed design on the iPhone 15 Pro. The back glass is also easily replaceable, Apple says. If true, this should make repair more affordable.

iPhone 15 Pro

Iphone 15 pro and pro max to use titanium.

Apple has lifted the curtain on iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. This line will use titanium side rails. Apple says not only is titanium lighter, but these are the thinnest borders ever put on an iPhone.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus prices remain the same

The iPhone 15 will start at $799 and the iPhone 15 Plus will start at $899. No price increase over the iPhone 14.

iPhone 15 stats

Usb-c comes to iphone (finally).

The iPhone 15 line will now include a USB-C port.

Apple has finally announced that USB-C is coming to iPhone, starting with the iPhone 15.

Roadside assistance via AAA coming to iPhone 15

Apple is using the tech in Emergency SOS to help people get roadside assistance. This feature will work with AAA in the US. Apple says people can get two years of Emergency SOS and roadside assistance for free.

iPhone 15 gets second-gen Ultra Wideband chip

Apple's Ultra Wideband chip is getting updated in the iPhone 15.

For better location tracking, the iPhone 15 will get a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. This will work with Find My to better find other devices or friends in a crowded area. Emergency SOS is expanding to Spain and Switzerland later this month. This allows people to access emergency services in remote areas.

iPhone 15 battery gets bigger

The iPhone 15 attached to a MagSafe charger.

Apple says the iPhone 15 battery is getting bigger, but doesn't give details.

iPhone 15 camera stats

True depth front camera.

Apple says the front camera does a better job of using computational photography to give selfies more depth and HDR capabilities.

Telephoto camera

Main camera on iphone 15 is 48 megapixels.

The iPhone 15 will have a 48-megapixel camera, giving standard iPhone users much greater resolution to work with. It'll use pixel binning to combine pixels and utilize computational photography to give stronger image quality and detail. But using this method, it'll cut the resolution down to 24 megapixels.

The main camera can use the center 12 megapixels for better zoom capabilities.

iPhone 15 colors and recycled aluminum

The iPhone 15 will be available in pink, yellow, green, blue and black. Apple says the iPhone 15 uses 75% recycled aluminum.

iPhone 15 unveiled, no third camera

The iPhone 15 has been unveiled, and it looks a lot like the iPhone 14 Pro. There's no third camera like with the Pro line, but the Dynamic Island is included. It uses an OLED XDR display and has a peak brightness of 2,000 nits.

The iPhone 15 will be available in pink, yellow, green, blue and black.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 starts at $799, available Sept. 22

Apple Watch Ultra 2 underwater

Apple says the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is available for preorder today for $799. It'll be available on Sept. 22.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 stats

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is unveiled. It gets the new S9 chip, same as the Series 9. This allows users to use Siri without network connectivity, just like on the Series 9. Brightness hits at 3,000 nits, 1,000 more than the Series 9. There's also a new exclusive watch face called Modular Ultra. Apple says to expect 36 hours of battery life and a diving depth of 40 meters.

Apple also doubles down on sustainability, saying the Ultra 2 uses recycled aluminum and that it's also carbon neutral.

Apple drops leather for 'FineWoven'

Apple has developed a new material it calls "FineWoven." It apparently feels like leather, but is made of cloth. Apple says it's also working with Hermes and Nike on cloth and recycled silicone bands using recycled materials.

Apple Watch stats

Double tap on apple watch: a through line to vision pro.

Double Tap feels like a stepping stone to future Vision Pro integration.

Apple introduced a new Apple Watch Series 9 feature called Double Tap, which uses hand gestures to control the watch one-handed. Double-tapping fingers can be customized to control individual watch functions, which works in a similar way to gesture-based accessibility controls that were introduced on the watch previously.

However, the official onboard tap function feels like a different step. It'll be useful for things like answering calls, but it's also similar in spirit to some of Apple Vision Pro's hand tracking-based gesture features.

The Vision Pro doesn't work with the Apple Watch (yet). But it should, eventually, and the watch's haptics and display could also make it a key AR accessory. Is Apple connecting the dots slowly here?

Carbon neutral

Apple doubles down on sustainable materials.

Octavia Spencer is featured at Apple's event as Mother Nature.

Apple says it'll use more sustainable metals and materials with its products. This includes eliminating leather iPhone cases, possibly switching to alternative materials. The company's offices are also carbon neutral. Apple says its suppliers are switching to renewable energy and that the company has been planting plenty of trees, going so far as to say it's planted forests. This is a bit of marketing spin, as planting trees can't pull us out of our carbon output problem.  Tim Cook also says by 2030, all Apple products will have a net zero carbon output. Still, don't take this "greenwashing" at face value, as achieving net zero and carbon neutrality is complex and often companies engage in clever language. It's best to wait for independent analysis.

Double Tap hand gestures come to Apple Watch

Apple now has Double Tap on the Apple Watch. It's a new feature that allows you to tap your index and thumb together twice to answer calls. This is thanks to internal hardware on the Apple Watch that can measure your finger movements. This includes being able to snooze your alarms or hang up when on a call. The Apple Watch Series 9 will also get brighter, going up to 2,000 nits.

Watch OS 10 gets Name Drop

Apple watch series 9.

Apple brings new features from iPhone to Apple Watch. This includes Name Drop so you can easily exchange contact info. Or when going near a Home Pod, it'll be able to sync with content being played.

Apple is leaning heavily toward emotional appeal with the Apple Watch Series 9. It launched the show with a sizzle reel of people whose lives have been saved with the help of the Apple Watch. Apple also says neural engine will use what's essentially AI to allow better voice recognition so Siri can better capture what you're saying.

Apple Watch, iPhone, but first Mac

Tim Cook is leading the show, leaning heavily toward how impactful Apple products are on people's lives. Including saving their lives altogether. Cook also teased MacBook and Vision Pro.

We're already starting to see iPhone 16 rumors

iPhone 14 Pro camera array

Even though the iPhone 15 hasn't been unveiled yet, we're already starting to see rumors of the iPhone 16 . The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will reportedly feature 8GB of RAM and have the A17 Bionic chip, the same processor that's rumored to power the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, according to a note to investors seen by MacRumors. The chip will reportedly be made on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s N3E process, an enhanced 3nm node. Compared to the Bionic A14, A15 and A16 chips, which were all made on a 5nm node, the A17 will see improvements to performance and efficiency.

Are new USB-C AirPods coming?

Apple's various headphone lines, including AirPods and Beats.

If Apple is indeed embracing USB-C on the iPhone today, it prompts the question when it might expand the switch to iPhone accessories. Recent Beats headphones like the Studio Pro and Studio Buds Plus already use USB-C for charging, but what about AirPods? All of the AirPods line relies on Lightning for wired charging. It would make sense that with this new love for USB-C, Apple will take the opportunity to bring the connector to its AirPods line. The AirPods Pro line just got an update last year , but a new case could make sense. The AirPods Max headphones also seem ripe for an update since they haven't had any real changes since they were introduced in 2020.

Any new iPads on deck?

Apple's 10th-generation iPad

If you're looking for a brand-new iPad, expect only the standard model to possibly get an update in the near future. Apple has reliably released a new standard iPad alongside or shortly after its launch of new iPhones. Last year's 10th-generation iPad brought a switch to a USB-C port, better cameras, a bigger screen and nicer speakers. We anticipate an 11th-generation iPad will eventually arrive with modest upgrades, but Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Tuesday that the company is unlikely to debut an updated tablet this year. But given that we got iPad Pro models with M2 chips as well as a new iPad Air last year -- and that the iPad Mini doesn't regularly get released -- the standard iPad appears to be the most likely to get a refresh next.

New cameras for the iPhone 15

Various rumors suggest that both the base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models will get significant camera boosts , including a larger 48-megapixel main image sensor. That would put them on a par with the main camera currently seen in the iPhone 14 Pro models and could allow for better digital zoom.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are slated to get a big upgrade in zoom skills, including a periscope-style zoom that could offer up to 6x optical zoom. We love the 5x zoom on Google's Pixel 7 Pro as well as the 10x zoom on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, so seeing stronger zoom skills on the iPhone would help make it a more fully featured camera setup for more passionate photographers.

Will the iPhone 15 get an Action button?

Apple's iPhone 15 Pro might be getting a new, mappable button. Several reports from Bloomberg and MacRumors point to the possibility that the Action key , which debuted on the Apple Watch Ultra, could be making its way onto the new iPhone line.

If true, this could make the iPhone more personal than ever, by letting a physical button provide fast access to apps, tools or other shortcuts. The iPhone already provides a similar idea through the Back Tap gesture that debuted with iOS 14, but a tactile button would add a new way to separate the Pro model from the base iPhone.

Will Apple reveal a Watch Ultra 2?

Apple's next major event is happening in a matter of hours. We're expecting to see a new iPhone 15, the Apple Watch Series 9 and possibly even a Watch Ultra 2.

Rumors are sparse for the Watch 2 Ultra, but they point to a minor upgrade from the original Apple Watch Ultra. According to the leaker known as ShrimpApple Pro , the Watch Ultra 2 will be available with a black titanium case. There could also be a faster processor and a lighter Watch Ultra 2, potentially thanks to 3D printing of components, according to noted analyst Min Chi Kuo . Nothing is confirmed until Apple officially reveals it, so we'll have to wait and see what surprises are in store.

Apple debuted the original Watch Ultra last year for $799. It's Apple's most advanced smartwatch as well as its most expensive. It's designed to be more durable than the regular Watch Series 8 and it can be used for extreme outdoor activities including scuba diving.

Apple Watch 9: What's coming in the new smartwatch?

Apple Watch widgets in WatchOS 10

We're expecting the Apple Watch 9 to launch alongside the iPhone 15 series with a handful of small improvements, as has been the case with the company's smartwatches. Last year's model added temperature sensing, and rumors suggest the Apple Watch 9 will get a new, more powerful chipset with potentially better battery life, but maybe not much else. Unfortunately, the glucose monitoring that had been rumored seems years away from making it into an Apple Watch.

Last year also saw the debut of the affordable Apple Watch SE 2 and the debut of the premium Apple Watch Ultra , and of the two we may see another Ultra smartwatch this year. But rumors also predict the earliest we'll see another premium smartwatch is next year, and it could have a brighter and sharper MicroLED display rather than the OLED screen that's currently standard on all of Apple's smartwatches.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max might get a price increase

From left to right: iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14.

We reported earlier this month that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models might get a price increase . Those analysts said they believe that the base iPhone 15 won't see a rise in price, especially considering people's spending habits are changing amid ongoing inflation. But people with the means to opt for the Pro and Pro Max models might have to pay an extra $100 or $200 compared to last year's prices. Apple had already increased prices for the iPhone in the UK and Japan last year. Taiwanese research firm TrendForce expects, however, that only the iPhone 15 Pro Max model will see the price jump, according to a report from MacRumors . If TrendForce's predictions are correct, then the iPhone 15 Pro will cost $999, just like the iPhone 14 Pro, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max will see a $100 jump to $1,199. TrendForce also expects the iPhone 15 Pro models will have 8GB of RAM instead of 6GB.

What colors will the iPhone 15 come in?

Apple often releases its base iPhone in several colors, with a more limited palette for its Pro models. A rumor from last week claims the iPhone 15 may come in colors like pink and gold, while the Pro models may debut a "Titan gray" along with a dark blue.

Will there be an iPhone 15 Ultra?

While we expect an iPhone 15, larger iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro, the jury's out on whether there will be an iPhone 15 Pro Max or if Apple will replace its larger premium phone with a specced-out, highest-end monster rumored to be called the iPhone 15 Ultra. Samsung has released its own Ultra-branded model at the top of its premium phone lineup since 2020, most recently with the Galaxy S23 Ultra . But as with all the other times when Apple has been late to the party (wireless charging, 5G), an iPhone Ultra will probably still please fans. It's also possible that Apple keeps the iPhone 15 Pro Max and adds an Ultra model. We'll see what the company thinks consumers will go for.

Apple might move away from leather cases

In a potential shift toward more environmentally friendly materials, Apple might discontinue its line of leather cases with the iPhone 15, according to leaker DuanRui, as reported by MacRumors . Both 9To5Mac and leaker ShrimpApplePro have also heard similar rumors. CNET spoke to a source who had heard similar rumblings, but couldn't definitively confirm them. If Apple does make the move, it could mean there will be fewer choices for customers looking for leather cases when the iPhone 15 launches, likely later this month. Luckily, there are some excellent third-party manufacturers of leather cases, such as Bluebonnet and Nomad . Both brands are featured on our best iPhone 14 cases roundup.

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max bring better cameras… and titanium?

The iPhone 14 Pro.

Apple is rumored to be continuing its tradition of saving the best perks for its premium phones. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are expected to get periscope telephoto cameras that extend their zoom range, faster processors and a new material for the frame: titanium. Otherwise, the phones should look a lot like last year's top-end phones, though rumors suggest Apple could shrink the bezel edge of the phones even more.

The return of a dual-lens selfie camera?

The iPhone 14 Pro's Dynamic Island.

After last year's debut of the Apple Watch Ultra, rumors of an iPhone 15 Ultra quickly followed. The rumor claims that this would be an iPhone that's a tier above the existing Pro line, starting with 256GB of storage and a telephoto camera with a variable zoom lens.

The rumor that excites me the most though is a purported dual-lens front-facing camera system, which I haven't seen on flagship phones since the Google Pixel 3 and the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus. I would love to see two front-facing cameras return to premium phones, and in this commentary I describe the benefits of such a system .

But I'm not going to get my hopes pumped up too high. There haven't been many additional rumors pointing to an Ultra model. A Bloomberg report Friday said there won't be an Ultra model, with Apple making the iPhone 15 Pro Max the most expensive iPhone this year. Yet one Apple Watch Ultra-related rumor might end up on the iPhone 15 Pro: It's purported that this model could receive an Action button that's similar to the one available on the high-end watch.

What does 'Wonderlust' mean?

Apple's Wonderlust event graphic shows a disintegrating logo.

Apple announced its Sept. 12 event with an invitation displaying the word "Wonderlust" and a disintegrating Apple logo. The term derives from the travel-oriented term "wanderlust." Does that mean Apple's next iPhone launch will relate to how the new phones help with travel?

While Apple doesn't necessarily tie its invitations directly to product announcements, there are a number of travel-oriented clues in the iOS 17 beta that might well correlate with new iPhone features. I took a dive into what Apple could announce based on the invitation and some existing areas the company has been developing, including the possibility of enhanced satellite communication, faster wireless charging and an improved Visual Look Up to make it better at scanning the world around us.

Apple Event 2023 as it happened - iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and more

Apple's wonderlust event gave us new iphone cameras, faster watches, and much more.

Apple Event 2023 at Apple Park exterior building

The biggest Apple event of the year has come and gone, and TechRadar editors were live on the scene and following the livestream from around the globe, literally. Apple packed its iPhone 15 launch presentation tight with new products, as well as an emotional appeal in keeping with Apple's corporate culture.

Just as we expected, Apple has announced the iPhone 15 , iPhone 15 Plus , iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max . To accompany the new phones, Apple also gave us new wearables in the Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 .

Our US Editor-in-Chief Lance Ulanoff was on the ground in Cupertino, feeding us his thoughts and analysis from the showcase, while we delivered all the news as it happened, with colorful commentary. If you want to tackle the story bit by bit, as it unfurled, read on.

Apple Park campus for Apple Event 2023

Good morning, afternoon, and evening from Apple Park or wherever you are watching the Apple Event 2023 as it unfolds. I am Philip Berne, your US Mobiles editor, corresponding with Lance Ulanoff, our US Editor-in-Chief, who is on the scene live at Apple Park where he expects to see all the new Apple gear today.

We are expecting the iPhone 15 family, of course, and quite a family it will be. The iPhone 15 Plus is expected to take a bow, and it maybe the final Plus model we see from Apple as it shakes up its lineup in the years to come.

We are also expecting a more powerful iPhone 15 Pro, of course, as well as an even higher-level option, probably an iPhone 15 Pro Max, though the iPhone 15 Ultra name has been kicked around for quite a while.

The iPhone won’t be the only star of the show. We’re also expecting a new Watch, maybe an update to the AirPods or their charging case, and plenty more surprises. Keep checking back, we will be updating frequently as the news happens.

Apple Park campus for Apple Event 2023

The sky is cloudy but the weather is perfect at Apple Park, where our Editor-in-Chief Lance is on the ground waiting for the news to break.

Lance says that "people are as excited about seeing each other again at this iconic campus as they are about all Apple is about to share.

"Most agree that it won’t be a sea change for the iPhone, but I am hearing some buzz about some big innovation."

Last time Lance heard buzz at an Apple event, we got the Apple Vision Pro headset. Lance says he can see Apple's Marketing chief Phil Schiller in attendance in the Steve Jobs auditorium at Apple Park.

Apple Event 2023 catering outside at Apple Park lots of berries

Apple likes to whet our appetites for new phone by offering the most photogenic catering in the mobile business. Most people don't get a chance to attend an Apple event, so please enjoy these delightful berries and other delectable treats that Apple serves its industry guests and media in attendance.

Seriously, I have to beg Lance every event to take photos of the breakfast, and even though it always makes me hungry, I'm fascinated by the beautiful spread that Apple provides.

Apple Event 2023 catering outside at Apple Park lots of berries

With Lance hearing buzz about some possible surprises, where might those surprises be found? We think we know a lot about the new iPhone hardware, and we've been treated to the iOS 17 public beta for a few weeks now, so we know a lot about the upcoming software. There's still plenty of room for the unexpected.

Is it possible that the new iPhones will work with Apple's Vision Pro headset? Could we see features that synergize the iPhone camera with the AR/VR experience? These are certainly possibilities, especially since developers are bringing iPhone and iPad apps to the new spatial computing environment.

Or course, there could be entirely new features and services that rumors have yet to uncover, and that's the fun of the Apple event. We don't expect One More Thing this time, not like at the Apple Vision event, but we do expect a great Apple show.

Lance on Apple Park campus grounds

Apple Park is truly a fascinating corporate campus. The interior of the gigantic circle is very natural, filled with local grasses and plants. Visiting Apple Park can feel like a bit of a hike at times.

Who gets invited to Apple events? Well, technology journalists, of course, but Apple also fills the room with Apple insiders, industry partners, and myriad other analysts and friends. Tech media tends to be a bit jaded, so if you hear outrageous applause, that's probably coming from Apple friends.

Once the presentation is over, we're expecting some hands-on time with all of the new devices, including the new iPhones and whatever else Apple shows off. Hopefully Lance brought his hiking boots, there's going to be a lot of ground to cover!

Apple Park campus for Apple Event 2023

It's starting! Are you ready?! You can almost taste the excitement, can't you? Here's one final Apple treat before we begin.

The presentation has begun with what looks like a commercial for the mobile family, with a cover of the song "It's a beautiful day" playing in the background. It's an emotional scene, leading to Apple Watch users who were notified of serious health emergencies thanks to the watch features.

Tim Cook on stage at Apple Event 2023

The live presentation is a bit different from what we see streaming at home. At Apple Park, Tim Cook has come on stage to greet the attendees and begin the show. We at home are still waiting for his presentation to start.

Tim Cook on stage at Apple Event 2023

Tim Cook has appeared to tell us that Apple will be announcing two essential products today, the Apple Watch and the new iPhone. Before Cook begins, he is giving a brief update on the Mac computers.

Cook reminds us that the Mac Studio and Mac Pro completed the transition from Intel to Apple's-own silicon. Our friends at Toms Guide get a nice shout-out for the new Macbook Air 15-inch that we also loved.

Cook also touches on Apple Vision Pro and says that development is ongoing, with app developers already showing off upcoming apps to Apple's internal groups. He hopes to ship the new Vision Pro gear early next year.

Now let's move on to Apple Watch and iPhone. Apple Watch helps us stay healthy. The iPhone impacts everything we do. Cook says "if you left either one at home, I'd bet you go back and get it."

The Apple Watch 9 announcement gets first billing at the Apple Event 2023 show and Apple COO Jeff Williams is on screen showing off the new Apple Watch Series 9.

Apple Watch Series 9 on screen at Apple Event 2023

Are those new gesture features coming to Apple Watch? Apple Product Marketing folks are talking about the benefits of using Apple's own chipset inside with a new Apple S9 chip for wearables.

It seems like the Watch is getting some serious processing and graphical upgrades, but Apple also promises battery improvements as well as new features. Sadly, Apple is talking up Siri first before getting to any really cool stuff. Clearly, AI and machine intelligence is front of mind.

Apple Watch showing iPhone finder on screen

Before giving us any significant new features, Apple promises improvements for the most-beloved Apple Watch feature: finding your iPhone. Apple says that the UWB radio that allows the Apple Watch to find the iPhone and vice versa has been improved, so it will be easier and faster to find your lost phone. Really, that's the feature you'll probably use more than anything else announced today.

The Apple Watch 9

Yes, Apple is adding a new gesture to its Apple Watch. The new "double-tap" feature works when you tap your thumb and index finger together. The Watch will recognize the motion in hand. You can scroll through widgets or select items on screen using your fingers, without needing to touch the screen.

Apple says this is enabled not only by the accelerometer, it also relies on the Apple Watch ability to measure things like blood flow beneath the skin. Kind of creepy, but it looks like a cool new feature that we'll use frequently. Navigating the tiny screen is a bit of a pain, so these gestures could make the Apple Watch much more friendly.

Mother Nature at an Apple meeting

Ok, now Apple got jokes. Apple is playing a skit where "Mother Nature" visits an Apple meeting with Tim Cook and complains that Apple needs to accelerate to meet its carbon neutral goals.

Apple is removing all plastic, more recycled, blah blah blah. Okay, it's very interesting, but it's not new fun toys, so we'll let you watch for yourself before we report all of Apple's environmental claims. They care, that's what they're saying.

A woman standing in front of solar panels

We got some really exciting new gesture features and promises of performance enhancements from Apple with the Apple Watch, but now the company is taking a picnic break to visit pretty vistas and other natural scenes in an effort to show off its environmental commitment.

This seems to be a major sidetrack from Apple's product annoucement, but maybe there isn't much more to say about Apple Watch? It's 0.0X% more screen and less bezel, and X% faster than last year, but that's hard to show in a promo video. You know what isn't hard to show? Recycled cobalt. That looks very industrial, like it needs to be dealt with properly. Apple is dealing with it.

Can we haz moar Apple Watch stuff now? Apple Watch Ultra 2, sometime soon?

Apple watch bands close-up

I'd love to give Apple credit for all of these amazing accomplishments, but I'm not really an environmental expert, and it's very easy to make statistics sound impressive when your listeners have no context. I'd love to think that billions of gallons of water is a massive reduction, but are we wasting trillions of gallons? Is billions actually a lot? I'm just not sure.

As part of this initiative, Apple is no longer selling any products made with real leather. It has created a new band material called "fine woven" Apple Watch band. It has also worked with partners for new woven and rubber concepts that don't use leather. Nike will offer new recycled bands for the Apple Watch Series 9 as well.

Apple Watch 9 summary screen from Apple Event 2023 showing specs and features

So, to wrap up the Apple Watch Series 9 before Apple brings out the Apple Watch Ultra 2, you get a brighter screen, a more powerful processor (which could also improve battery life), and improvements for Siri and other software enhancements.

There are also cool new gestures that let you hang up a call or navigate the widgets by pinching your fingers, instead of tapping on the tiny display.

Apple watch Ultra 2

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is here. So far, Apple has only been talking about improvements to the display, and new watch faces that take advantage of all of that real estate. Apple says the new face will offer more information at once than any previous watch face. It's still just a watch face, but the use cases are Ultra extreme, as you'd expect from an Apple Watch Ultra sequel.

The environmental kicks hits the Ultra 2 as well, and the titanium in the case is 95% recycled, compared to the completely virgin material used in the original Apple Watch Ultra.

Apple says the Ultra 2 will get 36 hours of battery life while active, or 72 hours in a more conservative power saving mode.

No significant new features for the Apple Watch family, but it's not like a lot of new wearable tech has been invented in the last year. Had enough Watch? Good, let's move on to the iPhone 15.

Apple iPhone 15 camera lens up close

Tim Cook announces the iPhone and the first color is a rose hue like we haven't seen on the iPhone in quite some time. In fact, it looks like a much more colorful launch lineup is coming to the iPhone 15 than we may have expected, with yellow, green, and other cool color options.

The first look focuses on the new camera lenses, so let's see what Apple has to brag about.

Apple iPhone 15

Every new iPhone 15 will have a Dynamic Island feature, not just the Pro and Pro Max models. Apple confirmed all of the Island features will be available to every new iPhone, as it should have been from the start. Hopefully we'll get some exciting development on the software side as well.

The new phone is a bit more curved and Apple says it should be more comfortable to hold. Apple is now going into extensive detail about how it creates the glass color for the new pink, yellow, green, blue and black models.

Apple iPhone 15

While Apple drones on a bit about environmentalism, let's look at that new display on the iPhone 15. It's going to be very bright, up to 2,000 nits peak brightness, which is double what the previous iPhone 14 could manage. That should be great taking photos outside with the new cameras.

Apple iPhone 15

There will be a 48MP sensor on the iPhone 15's main camera, a huge upgrade from the past. Those images will be pixel binned into a 24MP final shot, which is even larger than the binned images from previous iPhone generations. Those should be some huge files. Hopefully there will be a very fast USB-C connection if you want to sent a bunch to your computer.

Apple is using the larger sensor as an ersatz telephoto lens. This is more like a digital zoom, and the final images will be only 12MP, not the full 24MP of main camera shots. This is a bit disappointing, but we didn't expect a long telephoto zoom lens on the base model iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

iphone 15

Apple is focusing on improving portraits in the iPhone 15 camera, literally and figuratively. It will offer more control over the blurriness of portraits, and it says that the new camera should be able to automatically switch to Portrait mode and take a photo fast.

The new iPhone 15 will also use the infrared True Depth camera, used for face unlock, to help with selfie portraits.

The iPhone 15 will get the A16 Bionic chip first seen last year on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. That makes the iPhone 15 Pro a shoe-in for a new A17 Bionic chip.

Apple iPhone 15

Oooh, it's time to talk Connectivity! This wouldn't normally be the most intriguing part of the iPhone launch, but this is expected to be the first year Apple uses USB-C on the iPhone. It's time to finally drop that Lightning port!

Of course, Apple is talking up all of the various wireless technologies first, including the ultra-wideband (UWB) radio for finding your friends or other devices like AirPods or AirTags.

Apple says the iPhone 15 can use machine learning to improve call quality. That's an interesting feature, because Google is now offering similar on its Google Pixel phones, as part of the Pixel-exclusive featured enabled by the Tensor chipset that also specializes in machine learning features.

Okay, now we're talking about satellites. Apple really, REALLY doesn't want to talk about USB-C. It will talk to space before it talks about giving up Lightning.

Apple iPhone 15

Cool, cool, Apple, if my car breaks down in the desert I can get roadside assistance via satellite. Can I also charge my iPhone with the same charger I used with the Galaxy I'm trading in to buy it?

Here we go. "USB-C has become a universally accepted standard, so we're bringing USB-C to iPhone 15" [ed: only a decade late].

The iPhone 15 will get USB-C, and so will AirPods. Apple isn't offering up any of the contentious details we have been brooding over, like whether the cables will be locked to some proprietary microcontroller. The original Lightning cables were quite locked-down, at least at first.

iPhone 15

That seems to be all the big news for the iPhone 15. It gets great new color options, maybe the best launch color lineup I've seen for the iPhone ever. It reminds me a bit of the original iMac days. In the past few years we'd be excited to get white, black, and maybe one of these color options. I can't wait to see that Pink color in person.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro titanium close up

Now it's time for the iPhone 15 Pro "the most pro iPhone we've ever created," according to Tim Cook. This is the phone that every other phone is going to try to beat for the next year, at least.

The design is titanium, and it looks ... expensive. Like, this phone is definitely going to cost a lot more than previous Pro models. The edge looks smooth, the borders are "the thinnest borders ever on an iPhone," and the look is very premium, even compared to previous iPhone models.

Wow, this thing is gonna be pricey.

Apple iPhone 15

Now Apple is going on and on about how expensive the titanium is going to be. They're not saying it out loud, but that's the subtext I'm getting. This is the same material used on the Mars rover. That's an expensive thing. It's stronger than normal Titanium. That must be expensive.

It's engineered "with nanometer precision," which sounds outrageously expensive. There is white titanium, black titanium, blue titanium, and natural titanium color finish options for the Pro models. I'm guess one of them is more expensive than the others.

Apple iPhone 15

Apple is getting rid of the mute switch, as expected. Here comes the Action Button. By default, it's still a mute switch. You hold it down and it gives you a haptic response to tell you that the phone is in silent mode.

You can press to start voice memos. You can launch the camera. Hey, Apple finally adopted Android's best camera feature, the ability to launch the camera with a button, instead of dealing with the touchscreen! I'm happy that Android fans will get something meaty to complain about today.

There are tons of features coming to the Action Button, and we'll be sure to explore them all. Apple is also talking about the Standby features that are coming to all iPhones that can run iOS 17.

Apple iPhone 15

Running the iPhone 15 Pro will be the A17 Bionic chip, and Apple is talking it up now. Apple is manufacturing the chip using the industry's first 3nm process, which means that the chip should be much more power efficient, with more transistors packed into the same small space. It's impressive, but Apple's Bionic chipsets are already far ahead of anything you'll find in an Android phone.

Apple users get a lot more professional apps and features with an iPhone. You can shoot video in Pro Res format, which creates massive, high resolution files.

Thankfully, the iPhone 15 Pro will get faster USB 3 transfer speeds, though Apple isn't going so far as to call it a Thunderbolt port. That means it likely won't be able to drive external displays as well as a laptop or iPad Pro model with a Thunderbolt 3 or better option.

Games playing on iPhone 15 Pro with A17 Bionic chip

While talking up the undoubtedly impressive performance of the A17 Bionic chipset, Apple is dwelling on the phone's gaming potential. Obviously, the iPhone is Apple's biggest gaming platform, as Mac computers have a lot of catching up to do in the gaming world.

While talking up A17 potential, Apple casually mentions that the A17 will work nicely with AR games. We know that the Apple Vision Pro will use iPad apps immediately at launch. It will be interesting to see how developers are able to port games to the upcoming spatial platform.

Apple iPhone 15 camera specs from Apple Event 2023

Camera time, excellent, camera time, excellent.

Multiple lenses, of course, and the best camera system yet, of course, but what are they? "The equivalent of seven camera lenses in their pocket." Uhh, that sounds like a lot of digital zoom hokum is coming our way.

There is a "more advanced" 48MP camera with a larger sensor than the iPhone 14 Pro. In addition to 48MP RAW shooting, you can shoot in a more efficient HEIF format, so file sizes could be more manageable.

It looks like there is only a 3X zoom in the main camera, and the iPhone will use digital trickery to zoom farther. We'll see what they have to say.

Apple iPhone 15 camera module internal look

There will be a 5X optical zoom on the new iPhone 15 Pro Max, but not the new iPhone 15 Pro. This is the first time Apple has set the new iPhone Pro Max model apart in more than just screen and battery size. In the past, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max has exactly the same camera setup. This year, only the iPhone 15 Pro Max will get Apple's best telephoto zoom option.

Apple is also talking about 3D optical image stabilization (OIS), a first on smartphone design, but this could also be a feature in the Pro Max model, not the Pro. Apple says that the larger size of the iPhone 15 Pro Max enables the longer zoom, but it is unclear yet what other differences the larger size embodies.

Apple Event 2023 iPhone camera

Whatever the overall capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro USB-C port, Apple is saying it will be able to write directly to an external drive, which will be great for people using Pro Res and other high resolution video formats. You can fill up one drive and then just swap it for another, keeping the iPhone as the main camera throughout.

Apple is also showing off how Apple iPhone 15 Pro will work with Apple Vision Pro. The ultrawide and main camera work together to create spatial videos. You can record a video using your iPhone, then watch a 3D version of the video later using the upcoming Apple spatial computing headset.

It's unclear if spatial video features will work with any of the myriad other VR headset options. There's no reason it shouldn't, but ... Apple.

Apple iPhone 15

Finally we get pricing on the new iPhone 15 Pro models, and a view of pricing across the entire iPhone 15 family. The iPhone 15 Pro won't get a major price bump over last year's iPhone 14 Pro model, but it seems like Apple is kicking the Pro Max model into the stratosphere. Those new zoom cameras are expensive, don'tcha know.

The iPhone 15 will start at $799, and the iPhone 15 Pro will start at $999. Apple is keeping the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 on the market for $599 and $699 respectively, as well as the bargain-priced iPhone SE for $429.

You can start pre-orders on Friday, September 15. The phones will be in stores and maybe in your hands by September 22.

Apple Event 2023 iPhone lineup pricing from iPhone SE to iPhone 15 Pro

That's a wrap, folks! We've seen everything Apple is going to announce, and our Editor-in-Chief Lance Ulanoff is heading to the hands-on area at Apple Park for a fresh look at Apple new gear.

Are the colors as bold as they appear? Is the curve dramatic or comfortable? Will that titanium survive a sharp throw to the floor? There is only one way to find out.

We'll have more updates as we dig into Apple's press releases and announcements further, as well as plenty of photos and hands-on impressions. Keep checking back.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro USB-C port

Now that Apple's news is official and live on its own web site, we get some more details about the USB-C connector on the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple says that the iPhone 15 Pro can transfer at speeds up to 10GB. That's the optimistic maximum for USB-C 3.2, though Thunderbolt ports can theoretically climb much higher.

Every iPhone 15 model can charge other devices using the USB-C port. If your new AirPods, which have a USB-C charging port, run out of battery, you can plug them directly into an iPhone 15 to charge.

Only the Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models will get the fastest speeds and workflow for shooting Pro Res video. Apple says you can store Pro Res directly to an external drive, but doesn't say if this capability will be made available to other features or formats. We'll have fun testing to find out.

The iPhone 15 from the front and back

We are still live on the ground at Apple Park, checking out the new iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, and the iPhone 15 Pro models. This is the most divisive iPhone lineup we've seen in years, and maybe ever, with more differences between each model than even we expected.

We're also checking out the new Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, both of which have gotten performance upgrades that could equal better battery life for Apple's wearables. More battery is always our biggest request, so we're excited to get these watches in for testing.

Our editors are playing with cameras, trying on watches, and answering all of your questions as the Apple excitement continues.

The Apple 2023 Fall iPhone Event Live Blog (Starts at 10am PT/17:00 UTC)

iphone presentation 2023 live

It's that time of the year again - Apple's fall iPhone event, where the Cupertino company to unveil its newest generation family of iPhones. This year's theme is "Wonderlust," and will be the backdrop for the launch of iOS 17 as well as what should be the iPhone 15 series.

This year is widely expected to see Apple switch from their proprietary Lightning connector to the newer USB-C connector, in large part to comply with EU phone charger regulations. Besides the compatibility benefits that entails, the Lightning connector itself is coming up on 11 years old – fulfilling Apple's promise for 10 years of support and then-some. And while Lightning is the progenitor to the modern reversible connector, its lower overall pin count is limiting its functionality in some ways that the denser USB-C should help with.

Internally, it's all but assured that Apple will introduce a new generation processor in the form of the A17. Fab partner TSMC's production schedule has their first-generation 3nm node, N3B, well in to volume production at this point, so we're expecting to see our first shipping 3nm smartphone SoC. TSMC has never published generalized performance figures comparing N3B to N4 (used on the A16 SoC), so there's little basis for making specific performance estimates in advance. But as a full node improvement from the N5/N4 family, N3B should provide a perky punch, especially if Apple invests their gains in power consumption instead of performance.

Interestingly, Apple may be the only game in town for a while due to other chipmakers opting for the forthcoming N3E node due to costs  – but that's a story for another time. Regardless, Apple's SoC silicon has a strong history of delivering industry leading performance and some unexpected innovations, and we expect the new chip to once again push the envelope in performance and efficiency, as Apple is wont to do.

The live blog will start along with the event at 10am PT / 17:00 UTC / 19:00 CEST.

12:55PM EDT - Thank you, as always, for joining us for this year's Apple iPhone event

12:55PM EDT - Apple's presentation should kick off here in a few minutes

12:57PM EDT - As with their last couple of events, Apple is doing hybrid events these days, with the press gathering in Cupertino. We're expecting this will be another recorded presentation, meaning lots of flashy transitions and a quick pace, but no live demos on the broadcast

12:57PM EDT - Joining me for this live blog is the always awesome Gavin Bonshor

12:58PM EDT - As noted in our introduction, this year is widely expected to be Apple's big transition from Lightning to USB-C

iphone presentation 2023 live

12:59PM EDT - I, for one, shall miss the Lightning connector. But it's had a good run. It'll be better for everyone in the long run to be on a common port standard

12:59PM EDT - And here we go

01:00PM EDT - Opening with a trailer

iphone presentation 2023 live

01:00PM EDT - Apparently the theme is birthdays?

01:01PM EDT - Lots of different people celebrating birthdays

iphone presentation 2023 live

01:03PM EDT - "This year they all celebrated a birthday they thought they never would have"

01:03PM EDT - And on to the actual presentation

Rumor has it that Apple will unveil the next generation of iPhone models — the iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Plus, the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. And this time, the company could replace stainless steel with titanium for the “Pro” models.

Titanium frames would provide several advantages. The devices could be lighter as a result and the bezels around the screen could appear slightly thinner. Of course, it would also look different from the iPhone 14 Pro — but we won’t know how it looks before Apple’s conference.

More importantly, Apple will swap its proprietary Lightning port for a more standard USB-C port due to EU regulation. It’s going to be interesting to see how Apple pitches this change — and how future iPhone buyers react to this change.

In addition to this product launch, Apple could also use this opportunity to unveil a new Apple Watch as the company likes to refresh the Apple Watch once per year. Details are still thin on this front.

Finally, Apple could talk briefly about the Vision Pro as the iPhone event usually draws a lot of attention. The company still expects to launch its VR headset next year.

You can watch the livestream directly on this page, as Apple is streaming its conference on YouTube. You just have to hit the play button on the YouTube player.

If you have an Apple TV, you can open the TV app and look for the “Apple Special Event” section. It lets you stream today’s event and rewatch old ones.

And if you don’t have an Apple TV and don’t want to use YouTube, the company also lets you livestream the event from the Apple Events section on its website. This video feed works in all major browsers — Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

If you’re eager to watch the event, Apple offers multiple ways to tune in, whether you’re an Apple TV subscriber or a YouTube user .

What Do We Know?

As per Bloomberg News, all eyes will be on the iPhone 15 Pro line , with minor updates coming for the Apple Watch and AirPods products. The company is also likely to talk about iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and watchOS 10, its upcoming software updates for the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

The event won’t feature a flashy new product category - such as the Vision Pro headphones introduced in June - with the iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods lineup remaining at the core of the company’s ecosystem. Together, those products bring in about 60% of Apple’s total revenue , not counting the money generated by digital services such as Apple Music.
