Hondisi Bareyiri Movie Review: A youthful entertainer that kindles nostalgia and unearths grim realities
Rating: ( 3 / 5).
Days spent in college are some of the memorable moments in an individual’s life. Hondisi Bareyeri chronicles this bracket of time and also goes ahead in narrating the story of college youths after they turn into mature individuals. Although the subject has been tried and tested, debutant director Ramenahalli Jagannath narrates a story of friends with both resilience and emotional vulnerability. He successfully weaves the mixed emotions into a tale that is at times real and applaudable.
Director: Ramenahalli Jagannath
Cast: Praveen Tej, Naveen Shankar, Shri, Aishani Shetty, and Anirudh Acharya
The story revolves around a bunch of students at an engineering college in Davangere. The entire first half explores various elements of college life -- new friends, roommates, love, quarrels, and ragging. The bunch in focus includes Kumar (a)Kummi (Shri), Ranjith (Naveen Shankar), Jagan (Praveen Tej), Tiger Soma (Anirudh Acharya), and Saniha (Aishani Shetty), each one representing unique traits. The second half is where things get serious and trace their lives after college. The director ends the movie with the message to live life as it comes and accept it wholeheartedly but leaves us with a disturbing climax.
‘Gultoo fame actor Naveen Shankar, who plays the role of a loner gets into the character well and is a highlight of the film. Praveen Tej also has an interesting character to play, and he has handled it smartly.
Shri, Aishani Shetty, Archana Jois, Hanumanthe Gowda Archana Kottige, Samyukta Hornad, Bhavana Rao, Sudha Narasimha Raju, Dharmendra Aras, Avinash Shathmarshan, have given life to their respective characters. Anirudh Acharya keeps the light-heartedness alive throughout the film, and his comic timing is good.
Ramenahalli has managed to blend the various elements of college life smartly, all the while making it relatable. Even though the film has an ensemble cast, the presence of every actor is important and adds value to the story. Joining the director in creating this beautiful film are Prashanth Rajappa and Masti, who have penned memorable lines.
With eight songs, and lyrics to six songs penned by the director, the film also becomes a musical for Jose Costa’s compositions. The songs individually add value to the story. The background score rightly sets the mood, and certain moments are beautifully captured by cinematographer Shanthi Sagar.
Overall, Hondisi Bareyiri kindles nostalgic moments and makes for a feel-good film that can be enjoyed with friends and family.

A fresh breath of air seems to have hit the Kannada film industry with a handful of filmmakers daring to experiment with new subjects and not falling for the same old commercial mix-masala entertainers.
Hondisi Bareyiri (meaning “match the following” in English) talks about life and how youngsters from the present generation are dealing with it on various levels.
While the first half is more or less the basics of college days filled with the usual fun and drama, it is the second half that makes more sense and adds value to the whole experience of watching this movie.
In short, the film revolves around four college friends who are pursuing their engineering studies. Like every film portraying college/hostel life, the protagonist’s gang here is not different.
Series of pranks, college elections, the tussle between senior and junior students, falling in love, tragedy, and campus placements crowd the initial part before it takes a serious twist in the tale.
Simple and effective
Barring the usuals, the director keeps the rest with simple writing that turns out effective in conveying to the audience the essence of life.
It sheds light on the idea that most end up choosing a different path while their heart lies in something else. For instance, one may fall in love with someone but end up with someone else.
In other words, an electronic engineering student ends up working in a call centre!

Decent performances
With at least 4-6 actors playing the lead with limited screen space, it is a tough task to pinpoint who is the best of them all. They simply score a decent mark.
It is the story, the making, and the presentation that Hondisi Bareyiri impresses us with the most.
The simple funda in life is to live it as it comes. The movie proposes the same through diverse personalities.
The right balance of fun and seriousness is what keeps the audience engaged till the end. That apart, a majority of the film in the later part is shot in beautiful sere natural locations.
A couple of soothing numbers make the emotional ride more intriguing.
Yesterday’s premier show recieved lots of love from the audience.. Thank you everyone who showed up…. #HBincinemasNow Book your tickets now : https://t.co/C0OErMBDIB #HBInCinemasFeb10 #HondisiBareyiri #HBTrailer pic.twitter.com/Rrvn7rKpkU — Ramenahalli Jagannatha (@sundaycinemas) February 10, 2023
In the end, it’s fascinating to ponder upon the cinematic lessons on life in the present-day context. Watch Hondisi Bareyiri if you are a fan of decent storytelling coupled with some fun and joy.

Hondisi Bareyiri review: A simple story made immensely watchable because of its cast
Ramenahalli Jagannatha’s campus caper is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video
- Prathibha Joy
Last Updated: 11.06 AM, Apr 01, 2023
Story: Kumar (Shri), Jagan (Praveen Tej), Ranjith (Naveen Shankar), Soma (Anirudh Acharya) and Saniha (Aishani Shetty) are engineering college pals. Kumar and Saniha fall in love early on, while Jagan catches the eye of a senior who professes her feelings for him, but he doesn’t reciprocate the same. Ranjith finds comfort in his friends as he deals with a tumultuous relationship with his father.
As young adults trying to find a foothold in the corporate world, while also building new relationships, these friends meet new people along the way. How these people influence them and transform their lives forms the crux of Hondisi Bareyiri.
Review: When Hondisi Bareyiri released in theatres in early February, there was a lot of positive feedback about Ramenahalli Jagannatha’s coming-of-age tale. At the time, I couldn’t catch the film at a theatre, and was waiting for it to drop on an OTT. Is Hondisi Bareyiri truly deserving of all the praise and should you watch it now that it is available on Amazon Prime Video?
Hondisi Bareyiri is a simple and sober film with no over-the-top or larger-than-life moments. Even though much of the story unfolds on the campus of an engineering college and there are the mandatory seniors vs juniors conflicts, the tension doesn’t escalate enough to provide the set up for action blocks. In fact, even when the juniors emerge victors in some of these situations, these don’t translate into chest-thumping elevations for the protagonists. There’s a sense of normalcy to the proceedings that makes this campus a lot more relatable and believable than dime-a-dozen other campus stories that have made it to the big screen in the past.
The film opens with 5 former college mates reuniting for a special occasion and then goes into flashback, detailing as briefly as possible how life has been for each of them in the time since they’d last seen each other. Although professionally well-settled, Kumar and Saniha’s relationship hits a rocky patch soon enough, even to the verge of contemplating separation. Jagan falls in love with eco-warrior Kavana (Samyukta Hornad) and pretends to espouse her values to catch her eye, but she sees through the well-meaning deceit and decides to give her heart to someone who actually shares her beliefs. Unlucky in love, Jagan then gives an arranged marriage a shot and weds Bhoomika (Bhavanaa Raao), who comes with baggage, which keeps them from well and truly being husband and wife. Soma, on the other hand, gets dealt a better hand in matters of the heart, falling for a Manipuri co-worker. The reunion, as it turns out, is for Ranjith’s wedding to Pallavi (Archana Jois), a get-together that has each of them re-examining the cards they’ve been dealt and wondering if rearranging them could give them the happiness that’s eluded them after all.
Hondisi Bareyiri’s strength is not its story, some of which seems predictable and a tad drab, especially if you are used to fast-paced story-telling and far more twists and turns in the narrative. What makes the film worth the watch are the performances by some of its lead cast. Naveen Shankar as Ranjith leads the pack, followed by Praveen Tej, Archana Jois, Bhavanaa Raao, Samyukta Hornad and Archana Kottige.
Verdict: Hondisi Bareyiri is a feel-good film that won’t have you scratching your head wondering why you spent two hours on it. Word of caution – don’t head into it with great expectations. Approach it with an open mind and chances are that you may just find it a decent watch.
