The New Mexico Department of Health ( NMDOH ) has an ongoing need for public health professionals, which includes nurses, social workers, informational technology personnel, and administrative and clerical personnel.

Benefits of Employment
Employee benefits are offered to eligible employees. An eligible employee includes anyone hired into a classified, exempt, probationary, temporary, term or hourly position, and who is scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week and whose term of employment when hired is for six or more months. All of the State’s plans are available to every eligible State of New Mexico employee, regardless of where they live. Independent contractors are not eligible under the State benefit plan.

New Mexico Department of Health Needs Nurses
From inpatient facilities that provide skilled nursing care, behavioral health care, chemical dependency, and adolescent treatment centers to public health monitoring and treatment of chronic disease, infectious disease, family health and planning, to support for developmentally disabled individuals, to compliance with regulations and laws, the Department of Health is involved in all of it and every service needs nurses.
The impact to New Mexico’s health status depends on provision of all these services among others. Nursing is key to being able to meet our mission: “To ensure health equity, we work with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico."
The New Mexico Department of Health is present in all corners and areas of the state. If you like it cold or if you like it hot, we have a place for you to work. Do you like to ski? Fish? Boat? Hike? Facilities Management
NMDOH operates 6 facilities and an extensive community program providing the following:
- Skilled nursing at 3 locations including 2 state veteran’s Homes
- Adult psychiatric both civil and criminal
- Outpatient behavioral health
- Inpatient rehabilitation
- Chemical dependency at 3 locations
- Adolescent treatment at 2 locations
- Community living for clients with developmental disabilities
- Public Health
Public Health Nurses ( PHN ) are part of a state-wide team that serves to protect and improve the health of the public through health promotion, disease prevention and safety net services. PHN s work with programs, communities and tribes to assure:
- Chronic disease & cancer prevention/control
- Education, screening & treatment for sexually-transmitted infections
- Harm reduction & syringe exchange
- Tuberculosis screening & treatment
- Immunizations
- Emergency response
- Infectious disease surveillance/control
- Family planning services

Developmental Disabilities Supports Division
Developmental Disabilities Supports Division ( DDSD ) provides statewide information, resource referral and services for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities and their families. Regional nurses provide local support to families and providers statewide. The division’s Clinical Services Bureau provide clinical consultation, develop standards and policies; provide clinical training and create nursing resources. They manage a unique Aspiration Risk Management initiative; the Medically Fragile Waiver program; coordinate Mortality Review for recipients of our services and collaborate with the UNM Hospital system for clinics and health improvement activities.

Division of Health Improvement
Division of Health Improvement ( DHI ) is the regulatory entity providing compliance oversight for licensed health facilities, Medicaid waiver programs, investigations of abuse, neglect & exploitation, operates the Caregivers Criminal History Screening Program, the Employee Abuse Registry, and the Certified Nurse Aide Registry, and certifies clinical laboratories.
DHI also conducts health and safety surveys, investigates allegations of abuse, neglect & exploitation, and ensures compliance with statutes, rules, and regulations.

Internships
The NMDOH Internship Program provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to gain real-word experience in a practice setting, as well as contribute to the department’s mission. High School students are also encouraged to apply. Interns are supervised by public health practitioners who will provide them with internship experiences that closely align to the students’ professional goals, abilities, and areas of interest. The NMDOH Internship Program encourages professionalism, and provides an opportunity for students to develop positive work habits. Students can gain academic credit for their work experience and work with professionals in their career field.
