Kalabhavan Shajon's directorial debut Brother's Day starring Prithviraj takes a track suited for the title. Prithvi takes the plot forward and he is indeed a doting brother, whose sister is overcoming a traumatic past.
But this is not about a brother alone. Shajon, who has also scripted the movie, fills the movie with a host of characters. So it is only natural that the movie will have a host of parallel tracks, akin to the family drama movies of 80s.
The initial part of Brother's Day is mostly a mix of fun and frolic revolving around Prithvi's character Ronnie and his buddy Munna who run a catering venture.
But the movie doesn't start with that. It starts with a flashback somewhere in Tamil Nadu with the tale of a family which disintegrates mostly because of a drunkard father.
There, the seeds of a brother's affection is sown, but it is also tragic. The doting brother has to murder his father and his paedophile friend to save his sister.
Bloodshed is natural, but the brother and sister also had to part ways, but unlike in the 80s, we are not sure if the brother is indeed our protagonist or the villain till the late part of the movie.
It could be someone else also and Shajon has crafted this suspense element well.
Apart from Ronni's sister enacted by Prayaga Martin, Shajon also lists three other actresses including Madonna, who is the protagonist's object of desire.
Aiswarya Lakshmi and Miya are characters woven to unravel the dark hues of our villain, played by Prasanna.
Prasanna's character is at first dicey and gradually a psycho element is shockingly revealed. So a psycho who is into blackmailing women takes Brother's Day from the initial masala mix to a thriller narrative.
Shajon has handled the change of pace well.
Then unravels the tale of Brother's Day with some fine action sequences, twists and turns.
Prithviraj has dabbled with a mix of comedy for Brother's Day's lighter moments while Prasanna stands out in the villianous character's dark hues.
The comic scenes at times drag the movie initially, but the action sequences have been carefully visualised.
Shajon has pitched Brother's Day as a family movie initially but he later swaps it to thriller mode.
The director has also used flashbacks a bit too much to unravel the plot and along with the songs, the the two-hour-forty-five-minute movie may be considered a bit lengthy.
But then it is positioned as an Onam release and that justifies a vast array of characters and the duration of the movie.
Brother's Day has all ingredients of a commercial entertainer though the presence of some characters may seem as a deliberate act by the filmmakers.
Shajon has also not bothered to unravel the reason behind the villain's psychic trait.
Since the movie begins in Tamil Nadu it is only apt that a Tamil song wafts in it, but the surprise is that it is in the voice of a Tamil star.
Shajon himself makes a cameo appearance towards the end to close the case of an apparent murder of a hardcore criminal from Tamil Nadu, which turns out to be our villain to redeem the movie from the dark clutches of a psycho killer so that peace, harmony, fun, frolic and romance can flow into the lives of our dear brother and his near and dear ones.

Brothers Day Review (No Spoilers): A Movie For People Who Really Really Love Prithviraj
I did it! A Malayalam movie opening day in theaters! I am so tired. I almost fell asleep in the theater, but then I didn’t. And now I have achieved things and I can write the review.
Does seeing Prithviraj smile make you smile? Does watching him beat up bad guys with big kicks and long legs make you cheer? Does seeing him be a sweet and sensitive and loving brother make your heart grow three sizes? Would you be happy with an entire film that is just Prithviraj bein’ cute and a plot that makes no sense? In that case, this is the film for you! On the other hand, if you are lukewarm on Prithviraj but like good movies, this is not so much for you.
When I was in college, I decided to spend one Saturday night finally watching Giant (very long American film). It started right in the middle of things, no opening credits or anything, our hero was already middle-aged with grown children, there were all these relationships and issues I didn’t understand that were just referenced somehow. I thought it was super smart and artsy and groundbreaking. And then I realized that it was a 2 disc set and I had put in the second disc first. I started over from the real beginning and it all made a lot more sense.
That’s what I kept thinking of watching this movie. Did they put the reels in the wrong order? Or was there somehow a bit of a totally different Prithviraj movie that got stuck in her in the middle of this one? Surely there is an explanation for why this feels like 3 different movies (a comedy, a human tragedy, and a crime thriller) weirdly shoved together.
Part of it was on purpose, this is one of those thrillers where it all comes together at the end, all the stories that don’t seem connected actually are. And there is the theme from the title, brothers, that threads through it all. But ultimately there are a lot of hanging threads. And even the theme isn’t explored quite as much as it could, or should, be.
It’s not all bad, Prithviraj is his charming star charisma self. The humorous group of friends are fun. The two heroines are well-performed by Aishwarya Lekshmi and Madonna Sebestian. Madonna’s character in particular is something a little bit different than I have seen before. She’s one of the gang with the guys, while still being a nice kind person and getting along fine with women too. She’s rich, but from a funny lowerclass type of rich father, not a spoiling her type of father. Heck, I even like her clothes! She goes around in jeans and nice sweaters and tops. Not aggressively “tomboy” but very much “I want to get around and do things, I am not interested in wearing pretty clothes”. Aishwarya also has great clothes, come to think of it. Subtly childish, dresses with high waists and long skirts. Not unattractive, not inappropriate, but with a feeling of someone who is a little fragile and a little young.
But, yeah, the plot is pretty weak. And the construction is very weak, random comedy sections after tragedy, and then the script never ties them all back together. But hey, Prithviraj has like 5 fight scenes and a whole bunch of “good brother” moments. And wears a suit, like, A LOT.

Hahahaha! I loved your Giants anecdote. I loved that movie.
It’s a really good movie! Much better than I expected. Even though it has a regular chronological narrative.

Good, I didn’t know if I should watch it, but maybe I’ll try.
It’s not a great movie, but you know when Prithviraj is supportive and loving to his little sisters and your heart grows three sizes? There is SO MUCH of that.

Brother's Day Review - A Potentially Good Family Thriller Drama That Falls Just Average!
Suhansid Srikanth
Kalabhavan Shajohn’s directorial debut Brother’s Day is a thriller that attempts to be happily commercial. The film has all that you want. A star like Prithvi Raj in his uber cool charm and fun after a while.. Yes! An ensemble cast.. Yes! Mindless jokes.. Yes! Foot-tapping music numbers.. Yes! Melodrama of a comic character who occasionally worries about him not having a child.. Yes! A brutal villain who blackmails, demands ransom and kills random girls for no reason.. Yes! A final climax fight where good takes over the evil.. Yes! It all does sound a bit cliched.. but the film does engage you for the most parts.
The story starts off with a dramatic prologue of a brother and sister in a small rural town in TamilNadu. The brother kills his own father and his father’s friend when he finds out that they are trying to molest his sister. With blood shaded hands, he holds her sister and comes out. When neighbours try to catch him.. he runs away. The sister is left all alone now. There starts this film! And, for a good long time, we don’t see what happened to both of them. And that is quite interesting. It makes us go with the obvious guess that PrithviRaj is that brother. The film tricks out with this as twistful as it can be.
After a bunch of serious films, PrithviRaj is relaxed and in super fun mode in this outing. The style and charm pulls off the otherwise heavy film. Madonna Sebastian plays this character that doesn’t believe in men or marriage. The shade is interesting as it doesn’t flex itself into a female lead. Aishwarya Lekshmi as Santa comes into the scene almost after an hour and half of the film.. yet, she brings out the character alive with her superb screen presence.
Prasanna, plays Shiva, this gruesome antagonist at his psychotic best. The character’s traits are so out of nowhere. We don’t get his intentions. We don’t get what sort of reasons that the story could have demanded to picture him as a psychopath who would let a dog scramble, scratch and bite a woman’s body and watch it with a pleasure. Though Prasanna tries his best to etch an evil shade to the role, other characters unanimously falling in his trap with zero question on his why and whereabouts irks us.
4 Musics and Nadirshah has scored the film. Dhanush has written and sung a song as well. Though the tracks are kinda good.. the background score is over the board and too on the face. Akhilesh Mohan’s editing could have been a bit more crispier and compactful as the film unreasonably stretches out further and further.
The problem with the film is how it fools around for more than an entire half in silly jokes and practical comedy while bagging up all the traumatic drama to head up for climax. For all that name dropping title, the actual relationship of brother and sister between PrithviRaj and Prayaga Martin doesn’t come off convincing. The tragedy that happens to her is told more as a story than a doom. There is Miya as well who plays another victim of Shiva.. whose character aligns with him to trap other victims and at the end, comes off heroic by helping out PrithviRaj to find where they are located. We get that somehow the film has to end.. but when it snails for more than hundred minutes and rushes out on the next sixty minutes.. it quickly falls as made up!
Kalabhavan Shajohn’s Brother’s Day, starring PrithviRaj, Madonna Sebastian, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Prasanna is an averagely engaging family thriller drama that takes a long while to kick-in into the actual plot.

Brother's Day movie review: Prithviraj Sukumaran does a less noisy version of Mikhael
Brother’s Day is about extreme violence that fails to evoke any empathy for the survivors because they are so sketchily written.
Language: Malayalam
A song called ‘ Thalolam Thumbippennale ’ with the catchphrase Zing zig a zig zig plays at a birthday party right before the interval of the Malayalam film Brother’s Day . With no particular relevance to either the setting (Kerala) or the characters in the story (not one of them a Hindi bhaashi ), the number begins with some Hindi lines. A few minutes earlier, a group of turbaned men had appeared but not said a word in a room where the hero was meeting a friend. A large group of similarly turbaned men turn up to back an ensemble of Malayali characters as they dance wildly to ‘ Thalolam Thumbippennale ’ with moves that mimic the Bhangra. Those background figures are presumably Sikh, although the shape of their turbans shows very poor research on the part of the director. The movie maybe Malayalam and the actors all well-known Mollywood stars, but the song resembles one of those trite, large and loud Hindi/Punjabi wedding song ’n’ dance numbers that Bollywood would once routinely and mindlessly chuck into films, numbers that are gradually - thankfully - now getting outmoded in Hindi cinema.
That scene exemplifies everything that is wrong with Brother’s Day : it is a poorly scripted film that does not bother with detailing, it is imitative, it is packed with clichés, it is not faithful to its roots, it aspires to be something that it is not but does not do enough homework to accurately be whatever that other thing is, and it lacks finesse. Such casualness is particularly galling because actor-turned-writer-director Kalabhavan Shajohn has assembled a fantastic cast for this project.
Brother’s Day stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as Ronnie whose work in the hospitality industry brings him in touch with a wealthy and happy-go-lucky elderly gentleman called Chandy (Vijayaraghavan) and his daughter Santa (Aishwarya Lekshmi). Ronnie is devoted to his sister (Prayaga Martin). Early on he bumps into a woman who has obviously been marked out by the script as a potential ’love interest’ (Madonna Sebastian).
A character played by Prasanna runs a blackmailing racket with several accomplices, and is a constant mysterious presence in the background.
Multiple twists are forced into this thriller. Multiple sub-plots are thrown in to fill it out. Scenes are written and shot without much thought.
Sample this. A minor supporting character is introduced as a “Bangali” and is meant to be one of the numerous Bengali immigrants who can now be found working in Kerala - the actor playing this part, however, does nothing to camouflage his very pronounced Malayalam accent.
Or sample this. Ronnie is shown standing on a pier confiding in a friend about his tragic past. He is so heart-broken that he sobs as he speaks. She seems like a considerate woman. Yet as he finishes his story and turns to her, the camera pulls out to show her turning her back on him and walking away in slow motion in an aerial shot that is visually grand but makes absolutely no sense.
Or this. We learn at one point that Chandy’s daughter Santa is named after another character who was dear to him. Yet the film also features a scene from her childhood in which she is shown gazing at a group of people dressed in Santa Claus costumes accompanied by a couple of nuns, all of them gazing back at her one Christmas Day. Perhaps that was meant to be artistic and profound imagery, but in truth it is kind of laughable.
This is a film about extreme violence that fails to evoke any empathy for the survivors because they are so sketchily written. In fact, it does not seem to care much about them. They are just by-the-ways as Kalabhavan Shajohn obsesses over his primary preoccupations: making his villain intimidating and hero all-powerful. Among the instruments at his disposal is what seems like a sizeable budget for cinematography, but how does it help that Kerala looks picturesque through Jithu Damodar’s camera if the storytelling is so cold? And oh god, what is one to say about that over-emphatic background score?
The bad guy is a blackmailer, rapist and serial killer. He employs various means to ravage his victims. He is also assigned an ominous signature whistling tune and a vicious dog. Like him, Ronnie is filled with ideas for how to bash up and twist human bodies. Despite this, the action scenes come off looking limp.
Any entertainment to be drawn out of Brother’s Day comes entirely in the first half in the banter between Ronnie and his friend Munna played by Dharmajan Bolgatty. Of course it is all silly slapstick stuff but silly slapstick stuff never hurt anyone if it is inoffensive and you are in the mood for relaxation that does not exercise your brain too much. What does hurt is to see the gifted Prithviraj Sukumaran squander his talent on the generic thriller material that follows. When that happens in a film that also under-utilises the lovely Aishwarya Lekshmi and Madonna Sebastian, it is completely off-putting. After delivering excellent performances in substantial roles so early in her career with Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela , Mayaanadhi and Vijay Superum Pournamiyum , Ms Lekshmi’s decision to be a part of Brother’s Day either shows poor instincts or is a measure of the limited options available to women in Mollywood.
Towards the beginning of Brother’s Day , Ronnie references the Archangel Lucifer in what is clearly a bow to Prithviraj’s directorial debut earlier this year. Lucifer starring Mohanlal, another recent film with a mythological title, the Nivin Pauly-starrer Mikhael , and last month’s Tovino Thomas-starrer Kalki that took its name from Hindu tradition, belong to a genre of men-centric Malayalam cinema characterised by intellectual pretentions that unwittingly underline their vacuousness, high-decibel music, assembly-line scripting and stereotypical camerawork designed to build up the leading men as larger-than-life creatures. The basic storylines may change but they fit a fixed template, the degree of over-statement may vary but the cinematic vision remains exactly the same. For instance, Brother’s Day does not get as raucous as Mikhael and Kalki, and - despite its inexplicable disinterest in the impact of violence on the human beings on its canvas - it is not as nauseating as those two films either.
Prithviraj Sukumaran is a powerful male star with a multitude of choices available to him, living in an era in which a quieter, gentler Malayalam cinema is winning hearts nationwide. He has done films like Koode that have showcased his acting brilliance. And then he settles for this pointless film?

Brother’s Day Movie Review: A Confused Tale Of Cliched Heroes And Villains
B rother's Day , the debut directorial of actor Kalabhavan Shajohn, isn't the kind of film that can be explained in a one-line story. Rather, it's a jumble of several stories that are forcefully interlinked into the narrative with a lot of loose ends. The film begins on a lighter note. The main characters are Ronnie (Prithviraj) and Munna (Dharmajan Bolgatty), who work at a hotel that doubles as a catering unit, with the duo occasionally picking up tourists to help the hotel business. Ronnie also has an ailing sister who is cared for by an aunt.
Ronnie is easily one of the most indistinct heroes Prithviraj has played in a long time. He mostly lazes around, except when occasionally flexing his muscles, smiling and flirting awkwardly, empathising with a weeping man and several weeping women, making friends, and eventually wearing the cloak of a saviour. You get the drift. The actor wasn't really joking when he said he took on the film as he didn't want to worry his head over anything.
Shajohn is too focussed on weaving this mess of a screenplay around an obnoxiously cruel antagonist Shiva (Prasanna), who is like a fathomless pit of a black hole. He does everything he can get his dirty hands on to endanger mankind. From extorting money from businessmen using honeytraps and slaughtering men to molesting women and throwing the bodies into forests. In one scene, he derives pleasure by watching a canine chew on a nude, unconscious woman. And, apparently this is being marketed as a family entertainer! But this guy has no backstory or personality, all we are told in the end is that he was a dreaded criminal.
Unlike his counterparts from a mimicry background, Shajohn falls flat with the humour portions, with not a single memorable comedy scene. Dharmajan Bolgatty rehashes his own humour lines and Prithviraj tries earnestly to look funny, but to no avail.
The rest of the convoluted characters are all victims of the antagonist. And, they are all shockingly underwritten — a Muslim girl (Miya) who falls for his threats to save the family's honour, Aishwarya Lekshmi's Santa who is adopted by Vijayaraghavan (why does he get such awful roles?) and has a ludicrous backstory. We are never told as to why the villain picks his victims and there is no sense of intrigue, despite the multiple twists, or even a detailed police investigation, despite a long line of serial murders.
The hero has a romantic interest in Madonna, who is this rich girl who comes from a broken home, but carries a bigger heart. So, we have that token scene where the hero discovers that she runs an old age home and is left seriously impressed. Another cliched scene where she talks about a childhood in which her mom introduced her to alcohol, leaving her sore about relationships forever. In fact, in one scene after Ronnie narrates his tearful backstory, you have a bizarre long shot of the heroine walking away without saying a word.
Running over 2 hrs and 40 minutes, the film is also simply too long, with a needless, distasteful Punjabi-Kerala wedding song, a tiresome stretch around Vijayaraghavan and his drunken brawls, a silly bit around Kottayam Nazeer's character and his infertility woes, and a Prithviraj wondering whether he is on a vacation or on a film set.

Ronnie and Munna are friends who work in a catering company. They come across a lot of people. They don’t know that a particular person would become a fate changer. Shiva is a psychotic and he wants to trap people with his words. How Ronnie, Munna and Shiva are connected? Watch the film to know the rest.
Star Performance
Prithviraj has done justice to the given role. Prasanna is good with his debut film as a psycho. Dharmajan, Madonna, Prayaga, Aishwarya and the rest of the stars are best in their roles.
Kalabhavan Shajon is successful in his first outing as a director. He has scripted and executed well. The character selection is perfect and the stars fit in the roles, well. The story has a lot of sub-plots with emotional connection. Prithvi has done the action sequences well too. The characters are properly designed. The film has all the emotions, including love, hate, sad, etc. Similarly, it has suspense, action, romance and comedy too. The music is fine. The cinematography and the editing are good too.
What’s There?
- The performance of the stars are impressive
- The script, screenplay and execution by Shajon
- Right choice of stars
What’s Not There?
- Traditional dialogues when a guy saves a girl
The film is good to watch once with the performance of the stars. Kalabhavan Shajon has a good future as a director.

Brother's Day is a 2019 Indian Malayalam-language action thriller film [1] written and directed by Kalabhavan Shajohn in his directorial debut.
